Yes, the same idea came to me - maybe he and the other David were cousins. Not unusual at all for names to repeat in families. I will have to pursue this further. I am not too sure if a DNA test will work since we descend through David's daughter on my maternal grandmother's side - a lot of females there. But, I will continue to do some futher investigationg. I think that is still a possibility, because our David could still be the son of a different brother of Abraham's. I'd like to suggest you look into the family of David Phillips Sr of Orange co., NC. He was listed on the 1755 tax list there. Benjamin is one of his family names. There is a William Phillips who has sons, David & Joel, I think the will is dated 1794. I am not certain whether William is David Sr.'s son or grandson, but I'm pretty sure they are related. Has anyone from your Phillips line had the dna testing yet? I strongly encourage you to find someone to do that, it will help rule out a lot of different Phillips, and possibly put you with a group of names that will make a giant leap forward. Dear Nancy Kiser, and Dear PHILLIPS List:Members: People in the message you've posted about Abraham Phillips in Rockingham County are perhaps related to my ancestors because five of the names are identical to names in my records. Abraham Phillips, Charles Phillips, Pearce Phillips, Polly [Mary] Phillips, James Phillips. Where they lived before going to Rockingham County? David Phillips is likely to be Welsh. Hi, Mary Jane et al, No, I don't think the line of Abraham Philips of Rockingham Co NC is related to your Phillips line, because your DNA does not match. We have two descendants of Abraham Philips in the project, and their results are shown in Family Group 16. Unfortunately, both of these men are very private and will not allow us to post their pedigrees; however, they both descend from Abraham Philips of Rockingham Co NC. As you probably know, Mary Jane, we just received DNA results back on a proven descendant of Thomas and Isabelle Phillips of Craven Co NC, and his results matched Family Group 5, not Family Group 16. As I recall, that is your Phillips line. This is a perfect example of the helpfulness of DNA analysis. Capt. Levi PHILIPPS was an employee of the Honourable East India Company, in the Marine Service in Bombay. In 1800, in Bombay Presidency, India, Levi PHILIPPS married Julia PAGE. They had two children (twins?) baptized in Bombay in 1803, John Lloyd PHILIPPS and Caroline Charlotte Ann PHILIPPS. Levi, later, lived in Montague Place, Cheltenham, Glos, England. He died at Carmarthen, on April 26th., 1825. John Lloyd PHILIPPS, Levi's eldest son, was subsequently a barrister at law and Registrar of the Supreme Court in Bombay, who died in Cairo in 1846. There is a possible linkage of this Levi with Surgeon Major Benjamin PHILIPPS, of my posting a few minutes ago - there are several connections, too much to be mere co-incidences. I am seeking assistance in finding the parentage and / or pedigree of Capt. Levi PHILIPPS. Can anyone out there help, please? Best wishes. Peter Ferreira Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Benjamin PHILIPPS was born about 1772, location unknown, year estimated from death certificate and from his m.i.. In 1790, probably in Bombay, India, he earned his Certificate of Corporation of Surgeons. On April 30th., 1794, he was was placed on the Muster Roll of the 2nd. European Infantry, Bombay, India [Hodson’s Index: Bo Med 245]. On March 20th., 1802, in Bombay, Benjamin PHILLIPS <sic>, Surgeon of the 7th. Regiment of Native Infantry married (1) Charlotte Ann PAGE (Asiatic Annual Register rd iv, page 116; also index of marriages in Bombay Presidency on Mormon film # 0498563). His name was spelled Philips in the Service Army Lists, Medical, Bombay, and in the Roll of Corporation of Surgeons. On January 7th., 1818, he became a Member of the Bombay Medical Board. In 1819, in Bombay, he married (2) Harriet(t) DRAPER (index of marriages in Bombay Presidency on Mormon film # 0498563). Surgeon Major Benjamin PHILIPPS retired on November 21st., 1825. Benjamin sailed from Bombay to England, leaving on November 20th., 1825, on the S. S. Brittania. By 1830, Benjamin PHILIPPS, esq., was living in 3 Berkeley Place, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England (Pigot’s Directory). Benjamin PHILIPPS, aged 66, died of “spasms” on March 13th., 1838, in 3 Berkeley Place, Cheltenham - I have his death certificate; he was buried with m.i. in The Cheltenham Chapel Graveyard, St. George’s Place, Cheltenham (grave marker # 154). Benjamin’s will mentions his widow, Harriet, together with his four children: Henry, James Rees, Elizabeth Henrietta and John Sutherland, in that order. Harriet, aged 68, died in Cheltenham, on December 13th., 1858 and was buried with Benjamin. There is a possible linkage with Levi PHILIPPS, who may be his brother, also employed in Bombay by the Honourable East India Company. I am seeking assistance on the parentage and / or pedigree of Benjamin PHILIPPS. Can anyone help, please? Best wishes. Peter Ferreira Toronto, Canada.

Before the advent of DNA analysis in genealogy, there was a theory that your Thomas (Fretwell?) Phillips of Randolph Co, WV was a descendant of Rev. George Phillips of Watertown, MA. However, DNA has now disproved that theory. Three descendants of Thomas (Fretwell?) Phillips have been DNA tested and three descendants of Rev. George Phillips have been DNA tested, and their DNA does not match. The descendants of Thomas (Fretwell?) Phillips are shown in Phillips Family Group 5 and the descendants of Rev. George Phillips are shown in Phillips Family Group 30 on the Patriarchs Page at this link: https://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/p/phillips/pats.htm The DNA of these two different Phillips family groups indicates their Phillips lines are not related within thousands of years. The three DNA proven descendants of Thomas (Fretwell?)
