So all rather tenuous really. I need a lot more information on the descendants of Griffith and Lucretia. Thanks so much to Herb Savage (herb@perftech.com), who responded personally and immediately to my e-mail asking about my John and Elizabeth Phillips ancestors in Maine and/or Quebec and their descendants. "Just for fun," he said, he decided to see how many of my Phillipses he could find in the 1880 census, on the LDS Family Search site. He found a multitude! Some of them I knew about, some not. I am deeply grateful!! And Herb is a fellow San Antonian! We have now met by phone. (His Phillipses are not mine, alas). What a service the Phillips list and Family Search can provide! I have been watching the Phillips list for several weeks, hoping to see something about my Phillips family in Maine and/or Quebec. But I have not yet done what I should have -- posted my ancestors for the list. So here goes. My great-grandparents on my mother's side, John Phillips and Elizabeth Sargent -- immigrants from Canada -- first appear in America in the Census of 1850. He was a farmer and they were living in Solon, Somerset County, ME. I discovered from Quebec church records this past summer that they were married in Frampton, Quebec, on August 6, 1844. And their first child, Robert, was born in Frampton on Feb. 16, 1848. The next child, Barbara (later Barbara Phillips Foster), was only two months old in the June,1850, Census -- born probably in Somerset County. There were four more children, all born in Somerset County: Milton (my grandfather), born in 1856; Wellington, about 1857; Elizabeth, 1858 or 1860 (died unmarried); and Sargent, 1862. I do not know John's parents' names or where he was born. His birth year was apparently between 1821 and 1823. He died on December 24, 1890, and is buried in North Anson, ME. His children gave his birthplace in various records as Quebec, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Elizabeth was born in Quebec on April 1, 1822, according to her death certificate, or on December 1, 1821, according to her tombstone in North Anson. She died in Anson on July 22, 1896, and was the daughter of John Sargent and Barbara Leslie. They are both shown as natives of Scotland. I would like to know about John's and Elizabeth's ancestry. I have added information about some of their descendants but would like to hear from any relatives on the list. Many thanks, Robert Phillips (Bob) Clark, San Antonio, TX

Here is better info: On the Latter Day Saints site, find the 1880 census: http://www.familysearch.org/ Melvina is age 25 born in GA. The Head of Household in this printed version is "Felman" PHILLIPS, but everything else is pretty close to accurate. One family member (who personally knew the older sons, Sherman and George and the daughter) says the daughter is Delphia, not "Belfry." If someone has access to that census, would appreciate confirmation that the initial letter is Z for him. The probability is very high, in my opinion, that this is Zillman, or Zilman PHILLIPS. At any rate this is "Turk." This same census, interestingly, lists his father's birthplace as TURKEY.

I have a Lawrence Joseph Phillips born in Anderson in 1901. We were told they were from Indiana. His sister was supposedly a Margaret and then she is listed as a Mary E. on another item. I remember Grandma calling (cursing) Grandpa Jack or Jasper when she was mad at him for dying in 1954. We were told some family came from the south and some from PA. Josephs own son died of Scarlet Fever. I do think that they were all in St. Louis Mo Since 1910 or so. I have Joseph's mother as Ethel Phillips nee Van Free/Frie/Freo? hard to read in a 1938 baby book. A Ethel Free was found in 1904 Married to a Walter Phillips and having Margaret in 1904 in Clinton County Indiana. Beyond that I don't have much more information. I do have many names listed in the book. A Aunt Ellefredt From the Kersting side and as grandparents Mr. And Mrs. Chas Embry. But Ethel and walter were already listed as grandparents so I believe they were actually great grand parents. She was born Ruby Catherine PHILLIPS Nov. 24, 1911 in Braymer, MO, and immediately put in the Children's Home Society of Missouri for adoption. Earnest and Nella Richardson of St. Louis adopted her in 1913, and she grew up as Nella Jane Richardson.
