We wondered about Laura. We are descendents of Wm. Hart Phillips and his wife who was a Weld from Erie Co. Cheryl's relatives wouldn't tell her much about their background, but I told her I'd recently found out why in the Ypsi Historical Society Records. Wm. Hart had been accused of raping the daughter of a man whose house he was building (he built about 3/4 of the houses in Ypsi at the time) and was sued for $5000 in the 1870's and paid it. Several years later he sued the man back for the same amount, but died of a stroke before he could finish the suit. He had about 8 boys. Cheryl comes down from George, one of the twins. (Frank was the other.) And I come down from Joseph Hart (called Hart) who was close to them in age. As you noted, Delos also lived in Kalamazoo. He only had girls so we haven't found any descendants from him. Actually, we haven't found any descendants in Kalamazoo where they all lived. All we can do is surmise that Laura's parents died and that one of her uncles, probably Nathaniel or even James (heaven forbid Wm. Hart just in case he did rape that girl) took her in. Have you checked the censuses around the date of her wedding? I don't have the full details--I just know there was a wedding announcement of some kind in the paper, and I've never been in the Eastern Mi. library long enough to try to trace her. I got my great great grandparents' obituaries though. My husband's always in a hurry. It might tell in the census before she was married who she was living with. If her parents died, they might have died around Buffalo and Hamburg since the other brothers apparently came from there. But how you'd identify them I don't know. I have a brick wall there too --I'm unable to find any trace of Olive Weld Phillip's father Josiah or any trace of Wm., James and Nathaniel's parents. I had to give up census searches because of arthritis in my neck (I taugh! t college English and was constantly grading papers). That would be my only chance. I may go to the Mormon geneology room here in town and look at some of their stuff. I know how frustrating it can be. (I'm also stuck on one line of my 4x gr.grandmother, Bathsheba Bennet Wheelock. (Don't you love the names? Her husband was Abijah. There are three Thomas Bennets in the town in Mass. who would be the right age, but no way to tell them apart. All we can do is keep hoping and digging. I'm glad to have heard from you since Cheryl told me about you some time ago. Where do you live now? Did Laura stay in s. eastern MI all her life? I was born in Detroit, raised in Grand Rapids, and went to school at Albion and Michigan. And Iowa later on. We now live in Eau Claire, WI, 90 miles east of the Twin Cities. Our son Chad was married last year and works in New York (for Columbia University, trouble shooting computers for an academic dot com.), and our daughter Megan who' st! ill single lives in New Orleans raising endangered big birds (like the Whooping Crane and Saddlebill Stork.) They are 35 and 31 respectively. Keep in touch and let me know if you find something. You're only the second Phillips cousin I've found--or who has found me! Peg

I am researching Abner Phillips' brother, Alpheus. I have done some research on the family from Abner,Sr. forward if you want it. With what I can tell the line seems to go like this: Isaac Philips -Father of Abner, Sr. who is father of Abner, Jr. and Alpheus. I found Isaac and Abner, Sr. in Burke Co. N.C. 1820. Abner, Sr. in Gwinnett Co. Ga. 1830 and in Cherokee Co. Ga. 1834 Census. Abner,Sr., Abner,Jr. and Alpheus in Cherokee Co. Ga. 1840 along with Abner,Sr.'s other boys. By 1850 Abner Sr. and most of his boys show up on the Cherokee Co. Ga. census, but I do not find Abner,Jr. and Rebecca or Alpheus and Mary. 1860 milton Co. Ga. shows both Abner,Sr. and Abner,Jr. and Alpheus. Later,(1866 Blount Co, Ala.census) I found Alpheus with his family. He is there in 1870 and dead by 1880 Etowah Co., Ala census. His wife, Mary, is listed with their oldest son, A.J. This is about all I have, except some military info on some of them. My gg-grandfather, Hines Berry (H.B.) Brown and his wife, Martha Ann Merritt Brown, sold land to Alpheus Phillips - 1864 Blount Co., Ala.. Hines is also in Cherokee and Milton Co.'s Ga. at the same time as the Phillips family. Hines' parents came from Wilkes Co. N.C. (county next to Burke). This is why I have been researching the Phillips. I am trying to confirm Hines' parents that I believe to be Manley and Sarah Brown, from Wilkes Co. N.C. Hines Berry Brown b. 1817 N.C. - Methodist Minister Martha Ann Merritt - b. 1829 Cherokee Co. , daug. of Levi and Lillie Merritt. I have a tendency to think that the Browns and the Phillips are related in some way. Hope this helps. If you have anything that might help me, please let me know. Thank you, Anita

I think this might help me figure out the parents of Laura Elizabeth Phillips, who married Franklin Swift in Ypsilanti in 1854! You wrote: "I know there was a Laura who got married in Ypsi with her three uncles attending. Can't remember if her folks were dead or not, but I have a feeling that they were." Can you elaborate on how Laura fits into the whole Wm. Hart Phillips clan? I outlined what I know about Laura, Delos, et al., in another thread in this Phillips list. But briefly, I'm sure there's a connection (niece, or sister, or cousin): We have a family letter between two of Laura's step-daughters, mentioning Delos Phillips visiting the family in Ann Arbor. And, as you say, a Nathaniel and James Phillips were mentioned in Laura and Franklin's marriage record. I'm the great-grandson of Laura's only child, Lodorsca Adelaide Swift. I've been looking for Laura's parents for twenty years!

Yes, since my original posting in 1998 (!), I've made some progress on putting together the family of William Hart Phillips and Olive Weld (with a LOT of help from many kind correspondents). I'm convinced Laura E. Phillips must connect to this family somehow- a Delos visited the Swifts in Ann Arbor, a James and Nathaniel were at Laura's wedding, Laura was supposedly born in Buffalo NY, near Hamburg, where Olive Weld's family lived. I just haven't been able to conclusively prove exactly where Laura fits in this large family. She might be Olive's niece, she might be an unrecorded daughter of William and Olive. I'll have another look around RootsWeb, because I haven't seen the page you referred to
Hello Phillips researchers! I am interested in this William Hart Phillips family that went from NY to Kalamazoo, Michigan in the mid 1800s, and if they might be connected to "my" Phillips family who followed a similar path: Col. Elijah Phillips took his family from Preston, New London, Connecticut to "up state" New York by 1790 (likely thorugh VT and the Mokawk-Hudson Valley), settling at what would become Manlius Square, Onondaga Co. His son, Ezra, Married Tamar Walker and went to La Grange, Cass Co., in 1835. Phillips relation also lived in Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, Fon du Lac, Wisconsin, and in Marshall Co., IA in the mid to late 1800s. I know there were other Phillipses around New York and Michigan. I'd like to know of any in Kalamazoo area to see if there is a connection or keep people sorted! I am not related. My husband is a surveyor and had to take photos of a gravestone of this person. I will have to ask him for sure on which county he was in when he took this photo, but from what he said it was in the middle of a pasture. He does a lot of work in Ozona, TX so it may have been there...but will ask to be sure. The stone has the following hand written: William Robert Phillips "Billy" 7-10-1866 ------ 10-28-1890 "Shot in the bck while herding sheep with his shepard dog" My scanner is not working but if there is a relation for someone I will go to get it scanned and mail a scanned attachment to you.
