I found some of my family on his website about 1 year ago and sent him several e-mails and did some post-ems but never got any answers. The information he had was incorrect. I just went back to his site and found that some of the information has been changed. Unfortunately it is worse than before. My gr gr grandfather was born abt. 1791, not sure where but believe he was English. He fought in the War of 1812. He was John Phillips. He married Catherine Smith. Again I don't know where she was from. I believe she was from the Prince Edward Co. area of Ontario. He has Catherine married twice: 1/ John Phillips born 1787 2/ John Phillips born 1791 1st marriage 1818 Hallowell 2nd marriage 1821 Hallowell I have the marriage certificate in my possession and they were married 1 May 1821 in Hallowell, the White Chapel by Stephen Conger, J.P. I believe something should be done about this man. He should be discredited. I am going to write the Ontario OGS regarding him. Thanks again for the warning. Carol

    3. I'm searching for information on my mother's birth parents and family. She was born Ruby Catherine PHILLIPS Nov. 24, 1911 in Braymer, MO, and immediately put in the Children's Home Society of Missouri for adoption. Earnest and Nella Richardson of St. Louis adopted her in 1913, and she grew up as Nella Jane Richardson. Repeated attempts through the proper channels in Missouri and the Children's Home Society to try to acquire a birth certificate have been consistently unsuccessful. Still alive at 91, my mother is a widow in retirement in Lancaster, CA. We'd love to find family somewhere! Thanks to anyone who can help. Richard Tennesen, Capitola, CA

    3. Vicki, I have been wondering if your Edgar E. Phillips was any relation to my Phillips family. I also had an ancestor named Edgar E. Phillips who was born in NY in the 1820s and went to Michigan as a child, and then to Iowa in the 1860s. Is your Edgar E. Phillips the one who was from Ohio and then lived in Indiana or Ill.??? I think I have some info on your Edgar E. and maybe his father in Ohio, that I collected in passing while researching "my" Phillips relation. --Nick Sheedy, John Day, Oregon --- vicki72nc@aol.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to > this mailing list. > > Surnames: Phillips and Evans > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.families.aol.com/mbexec/msg/4300/nNABAIB/5841 > > Message Board Post: > > I am looking for information on Edgar E. More errors on my Grandmother and Grandfather, dates of death and birthplaces. When I notified them of the errors they said they could not change them but I could submit a GEDCOM file and they would publish it. Seems to me as long as they can sell a CD they don't care where they get it, no documentation is required. Their site has been helpful, but one should always double check if possible. When I sent some corrections, we had some exchanges of e-mail but them it all stopped. I never heard from him. I'm sorry to hear that he has been discredited, as he seemed to truely want to piece the puzzle together, and obviously had some information I'd never seen on my Phillips lline in MA... It was a great service he provided for me in that way. He did connect me to my line from England and Wales and I verfied his reference by going to my local LDS Family center and ordering the Films he used in his references. I copied all relative info from the church records and found some of his info was not correct. But on the overall picture he did do me a great services by pointing me in thre right direction. I agree with the previous poster that I think as long as people see it for what it is, it does not provide any negative impact. I did noticed that before he updated his site this year, he reference most of his data to LDS parish registers which anyone could access through their local LDS Family Center and order the films and then copy any info on those films. ( Very inexpensive about $2.00 a film) Some of the handwritting is hard to decipher but that is the fun of this research project. Now his new update he is reference all the data to his CD which is very expensive. Now my challenge is to find out where he found the data to enter it on his CD. I agree that he has left the hobby part of this project and become very commercial. Every one is entitle to earn a living but I don't intend to spend over a $100. for a CD that I really don't know what is on it. I reserve my opinion of Richard Ripley until all the facts on in. My line goes back to Andrew Phillips of Charlestown, MA and thence back to Simon Phillips who was born in Llwyngwir, Pembroke, Wales, England. I have printed out all relevant church records and have then on file to verify my line. Walter E Phillips Florida

    3. I guess this adds new meaning to Ripley's Believe It of Not (grin) When I started my genealogy 25 yrs ago you had to do it the old fashion way........ Now you can get your mouth swabbed and see if the DNA matches someone dead for 400 yrs...... Or you can go to these wonderful sites that someone who has never been in a courthouse except to get his or her drivers license........but they have set all day at their computers going from place to place gathering information that is probably for the most part as "iffy" as his or hers will be because few sites ..........do just that "site the proof for their information" I am not saying that John Phillips Buczek's site is like that I have never seen it. But it really makes me sick at what some people are doing to genealogy and the spreading of false information. So, people if you want to be sure that your gggg grandparents are yours you had better check, check, check or your gggg grandparents may belong to someone else. I have sent an email to APG as a followup to what previously traspired. Mr. Ripley is no longer listed as a member but continues to indicate as such in his web ste at Rootsweb. Here is what I sent to APG. Dear Kathleen Hinckly, I had emailed sometime back regarding a Mr. Richard Ripley and his erroneous information and plagerism of information. Mr. Ripley continues to advertise his association with the Association of Professional Genealogist even after being removed as a member. APG, possibly yourself, had emailed me that he was removed and he was to remove any associaition with APG from his sites. Please find below a Rootsweb site wherein he continues to profess his associaiton with APG. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=verdego He also advertises other sites he has where he charges for professional service and for CD's that contain this misinformation and plagerism. I ask that you followup on this matter so as more people will not assume this guy is a proffessional. When you reach his Rootsweb site you wil see a link to his other site and further links to additional sites. I myself will be emailing him to remove material plagerized from my site. I have recently found that there are many folks who have had their material stolen. We may have action to file a class action suite in this matter. Sincerely John Buczek PS: Please note my "Postem's" posted regarding PHILLIPS information specifically as it relates to Nicholas Phillips son Richard Phillips, his son Capt. John Phillips ad infintum. If any of you have time, please email APG. Their site is at: http://www.apgen.org/ John Buczek For those of you who may want to visit the Phillips Cousins site, go here. You wil not find everthing sourced, however each cousin will respond with sources. There are many sources cited and many pictures, documents etc. within the site. Please note the copy right info and please feel free to use it for your own personal use. I exchanged some information with him about a year ago, and found the info. I supplied him, on his site shortly thereafter. When I sent some corrections, I never heard from him. He had been so attentive that it left my imagination...wondering if he had become ill and tried to explain to someone in the family what needed to be done...and they goofed up or something. I'm sorry to hear that he has been discredited, as he seemed to truely want to piece the puzzle together, and obviously had some information I'd never seen on my Beam line in KY (through the Phillips)... It was a great service he provided for me in that way. I think he collected, as so many do, much information from non-proven sources. Sort of like the World Family Tree at Rootsweb did at one time...and much like the LDS stakes have always done. You are not purchasing someone elses work, but looking at the compilation for leads. As long as people see it for what it is,! it does not provide any negative impact. Novices do need to read up on what is safe to share and not safe...as it may be their credit or the credit of their family, or the identification of their family that is at risk. Other than that, anyone who makes an honest attempt at fitting together the facts, supported by documentation or not, is not the enemy. They may at the worse, be ignorant ... I do not believe that was the case with Richard. I believe he was highly motivated, and had resources that we would all be better off to have available. I don't know why he stopped corresponding, but assume it must have been a credible reason. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~rosamili/ Light- Christen

I've found many inconsistencies and errors in his data. He's even cited Phillips relatives/researchers I know personally as the source for data that is incorrect and most certainly didn't come from them. I tried emailing him several times almost a year ago for clarification and never received a response. Lee

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/nNABAIB/5840.1 Message Board Post: Regarding Mr. Ripley's information. There are so many errors that it is impossible to believe any of the information he publishes. Mr. Ripley states at his World Connect site (Rootsweb) that "Richard Ripley, MA, is a member of APG Association of Professional Genealogists (Westminster, Colorado) and OGS Ontario Genealogical Society (Toronto, Ontario). Nevertheless, there may be some unintentional errors or omissions in some entries here. Also, this site is very busy, and there may be overdue but pending updates." He is no longer a member of the APG. After receiving so many complaints, he has been dropped as a member but continues to indicate as such. In an email sent to the APG, I was informed that they have suspended his membership until such time as he responds to all of the complaints. If any of you have taken info from his site, I suggest you verify it before publishing. Mr. Ripley has plagerized many sites, mine for one, and has not asked for permission to use the information and has not credited the source of the information. He has so many errors in my PHILLIPS line that I stopped adding "Postems". He has not responded to my emails and has not taken action on the postems. Emails were sent over one year ago and postems added in the winter of 2002. This further contradicts his statement "there may be some unintentional errors or omissions in some entries here. Also, this site is very busy, and there may be overdue but pending updates." I concur with Nancy Kiser in her findings. A wise person would not use his data for the several reasons I mention. Sincerely John Phillips Buczek Marlborough, Ma.
