We now suspicion that her great-grandfather was George Phillips, b. about 1793-1794 in VA; I have come across clues that may be him, both in Loudon County and Faquier County, VA. It also appears he may have had a brother, Nelson, and a brother, John. A John Phillips married Rachel Ewers, sister to Mahala Ewers, who was the wife of George. George and Mahala were married in Belmont, OH (perhaps Goshen) on April 25, 1844, so George apparently made his way west. From what I've ascertained Mahala was born in OH abt 1811. I'm not sure George did, but his son Amor Boyd Phillips eventually ended up in South Dakota, married to Celissa Fritter from OH. Any information would be much appreciated! I'm trying to find this family and while my m-in-l is in good health for now, she is 80 and I would like to complete this side of the tree fo! r her. Thank you.
my phillips are african americans and mulattos that we think stayed in va. until the early 1900 when they moved to pa.,d.c. and md for better jobs and education.
ours is a black family from virginia.not connected, good luck.
don't know of a jacob phillips in our line.as far as we know the black and mulatto phillips who started out in rappahannock county ,va. never went south.there is a possibility because we are not aware of any who may have been sold or ventured south.good luck

There cant be all than many Herbert Phil*ps who would be called "Gentleman" at the right time and area? You say Herbert Martin Philipps died in 1792.. which would make it awkward for my Herbert, who was born circa 1794, so I am a bit stumped. Do we know for absolute sure that that is when he died?

I believe they were all white settlers. Our Phillips line was in Anson County, North Carolina in the mid 1700's and moved into Georgia before the Revolutionary War. Some of them migrated into Alabama in the 1840's. Let me know your e-mail address if you wish to discuss the family further --- Lowell
