This came a couple of days back and I thought it would be of interest to many of the subscribers to our List, it certainly should be to most of the male Phillips and it's now sounding more attractive to female Phillips. As to "topic", I can't think of anything more "on-topic". After considerable urging by our friend and list member, Nancy Kiser, I finally submitted my own DNA sample and am waiting for the results. I hope it helps me find out more of my ancestry. Cal Phillips, Phillips List Admin Phillips Boarcd Admin Note: forwarded message attached.

Shelley, I really dont know if we're related or not, but my past family originated out of the NE area of Georgia and South and North Carolina. My GG grandmother was Mary A.E. Phillips , daughter of Asa Phillips and Mary Sewell Phillips. Seems like the Phillips ruled that area back in the mid to late 1880's. I figured I could look at the pic and see a connection. I did get my DNA test kit the other day. Ive just obtained a copy of "The history of Franklin COunty Georgia" and Ill be lookin at your history with what youve mentioned. I've "rescued" an old photograph with the name of Mrs. Chas T. PHILLIPS on the back. The photograph was taken at the Nat W. Taylor Studio in either Spartanburg, South Carolina or Asheville, North Carolina. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with the woman in the photograph likely in her teens or 20's at the time. I am not sure if it is a photograph of Mrs. PHILLIPS or maybe of her daughter, though in addition to the name, someone has also written an address "2156 Calep St NW" on the back of the photograph. Some other faint writing on the photograph could be "Ana" or "Hana" or maybe even "Nona" just can't be sure. Based on limited research I was able to locate a PHILLIPS Family including Charles in the 1870 census records for Woodruff, SC as follows: Nancy PHILLIPS, age 44, a Farmer, born SC Perry PHILLIPS, age 19, born SC Mary PHILLIPS, age 17, born SC John PHILLIPS, age 15, born SC Marion PHILLIPS, age 12, born SC Buenah PHILLIPS, age 10, born SC Jackson PHILLIPS, age 8, born SC Charles PHILLIPS, age 5, born SC I am hoping to locate someone from the family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Bran said utilities are supposed to be on by 4pm Tues afternoon, I need to call him and tell him on the way home he needs to stop by and check to make sure there are no water leaks not being caught by containers before I get there maybe Wed. Today I need to get laundry done and some cooking done so later this week I can spend time over there and since I am so tired when I get home I had better have something cooked up. In fact I may cook all day. I made some tuna fish salad last nite, the bread we made the other day is good but it still didn't taste right with the tuna fish, well, knowing me I ain't gonna waste it-the tuna salad so will boil some pasta and make a tuna salad with it. I didn't put any pickles in it so will add green peas to the salad and some chopped onion, ought to be pretty good-well, it will be something filling when I am hungry. No Melba isn't moving away, if anything she will be stubborn and stay living where she is but I can't be running 46 miles every week to take her to grocery store when he vehicle is no longer running either and I will not let her use my car, she would have fenders dented pretty quick. I swear she sees just how close she can get to anything with her pickup. Bran finally made it to Bills tonite for a table trade. Bill said he wanted a smaller, not round kitchen table and if anyone would trade he would be willing. WEll, Bill had a round over a 100 year old, 5 leg Oak table one can put a leaf in. I told Bran Diana would want it, plus it was worth some big money, I told Diana and she said yes so the trade was tonite finally. Melba wanted that table so bad but Bill wouldn't trade with her. You know thinking about it I need to get going on taking the fencing over there and get started on that, will have to rely on others to pound posts to tie fencing on and need to do that before it gets really cold. I may call Bill tomorrow and see about getting time set up. that would be a good thing to do on a Sat if Bill is willling, I could get Bradley on a Sat to help if he doesn't have a soccer game. I think Bradley has his driving license now, anyway Sunday when he was getting ready to pull the carpeting down to burn pile, I yelled, Bradley, why don't you move my car out of the way-like a bullet he flew to the car, I laughed, when they first get their license they will drive anywhere no matter why, he backed it back up later so I wouldn't have to walk so far without me even telling him-so cute they are when they first drive. They will go to the store for you 6 times in an hour if they get to drive...... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Jane Phillips-Matz" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 20, 2006 6:08 PM Subject: Re: [PHILLIPS] Early Kentucky Phillips Dear Carol, Seeing your Phillips note, I'd like to mention two men named Charles and John PHILLIPS, who were in Kentucky in the early 1800s. My gr-gr-grandfather, Charles PHILLIPS, was born in North Carolina, married Jemima (her maiden name HARDY), who was from Craven County, NC, with a very, very well-documented line of ancestors in the PHILLIPS family as well as in the HARDY family. (In other words, Jemima's huband was Charles PHILLIPS, her mother was Mary PHILIPS from Craven County, NC; and her father was John HARDY.) And Jemima [Hardy] Phillips was the granddaughter of John PHILLIPS, who mentioned her in his Craven County NC will in the late 1700s and was himself born and baptized in Virginia in 1726. I don't want to bore you to death, but it's important to say that all this is thoroughly documented, unlike a lot of things on the Internet. My father, William Mason PHILLIPS, was born in Franklin County KY. Other names lead me to believe that some of these went on to Livingston Co, KY and downward to Caldwell, Trigg, Calloway and Graves Cos. Is this the John bc 1789 husband of Nancy that is in early Hickman Co, KY (parent of several of the above counties)? My greatgrandfather was Jacob Phillips died between 1881 and 1900 census. Wife, Mary Story(bn 1839), was from Graves Co, and there is a Jacob Phillips that according to the 1870 census is dead....and couldn't have married a dead man and had 2 children. Other alternative is that she married a much younger man, Jacob Jr(bn abt 1856). Also, is there a site that I can send my picture of Jake for other Phillips to see? There are a couple of things I would like to reemphasize in connection to your subscription, that a lot of people don't seem to be aware of. First of all, there is both a surname mailing list - the Phillips list. There is also a Phillips message board. Those of you reading this are subscribed to the mailing list, NOT the board. You can not subscribe to the board, you can however sign up ON the board for notifications when a message is posted. The mailing List is a separate entity. There are anywhere between 500-600 subscribers at any one time. You can help me a lot if when you change internet service providers (ISPs) if you will unsub from the list before you exit the old ISP and then resub with the new address. Yes, you are not subscribed by name, only by internet mailing address. I get from one to half-dozen subscription problems to deal with manually every day and spend quite a bit of my time for which I DON'T get paid. It wasn't much of a problem when I started this list some 15 or 16 years ago, but it has grown. I am able to "gateway" the board, since I administer both, to the surname list, thus any message posted to the board is automatically sent to the list. I had that done for quite a long time, however, recently there were a lot of postings to the board that were not appropriate for the list. Personal messages, continuation of topics without adequate subject headings, etc, so I removed the gateway. I may reimplement it again in the future. One further thing, I've been fairly lenient in the past but I will be a little more observant in the future, if you have a problem with something I do, or with another subscriber, please contact me directly - my address is freely available in a variety of places, don't send it to the list! This list is for Phillips research - off-topic messages may cause the sender to be unsubbed from the list. Thanks, good luck in your research, and if I can help, you know where to find me. Cal Phillips, Listowner/Admin. [email protected] Thank you. Cal Ph
Calvin, I agree with what has been said, because I too have hit reply by mistake when it should have gone to the person who wrote sent the e-mail. I'm sure the lady who posted the message must be totally embarrassed....I know I would be. Of course we are all assuming this was an accident & not done intentionally....therefore forgiveness would be in order. I'm sure this was a mistake. When they changed the list over they made it so that when you hit reply your reply goes to the ENTIRE List instead of to the person who sent the original post. On another family list I'm on it was disastrous when someone thought they were sending a "personal" email and they used some bad language while talking about a cousin on the list who had been putting down their research on the list. The message sent to this list was harmless and I'm sure the one who "mistakenly" sent it feels quite bad enough without being kicked off the list. Take care all and happy researching.
