    3. After years and years of digging, I have determined that the wife of Wright Stallings (1760-1836) was Polly Westray. I have also determined that the wife of Elias Stallings (c. 1694-1763) of Bertie Co, NC was not Susannah Arnold. She was possibly Susannah Denby. John P. Phillips married the daughters of Wright Stallings. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/i/t/Wanda-S-Pitt/index.html PHILLIPS, STALLINGS, WESTRAY connections, Chatham Co, NC Updated November 23, 2006 Wanda Pitt Cedar Hill, Texas [email protected] 1. HENRY PHILLIPS, b. Bef. November 1826, Lynn Twp, Posey Co, IN; d. November 30, 1853, Clay Co, IL. John Lloyd PHILLIPS was born August 15, 1893 in Llano Co, TX on Benjamin Phillips' ranch near Marble Falls. His twin was Mary Elsie "Alice" Phillips SHEPPARD. Other siblings were Valva Martin Phillips, Zula Francis Phillips BANKS, Charles Henry Phillips and Muriel Iberia "Phoebe" Phillips RANKIN. John Lloyd Phillips married Nelle Eleanor SULLIVAN December 12, 1916 in Belton, Bell Co, TX. Their children, raised in Dallas, TX, were John Lloyd Phillips Jr., Carol Elsie, Dorothy Maye (twins), and Mary Lynne Phillips. The father of John Lloyd Phillips was John Henry Phillips, born March 3, 1854 in Clay Co, IL, the son of Henry Phillips (1826-Nov 1853) and Feby Franklin (1834-1857), married October 7, 1852 in Clay Co, IL. John Henry Phillips was raised by his grandparents, Henry and Catherine (STANSBURY) FRANKLIN. John Henry Phillips moved to Texas about 1877 to live with his uncle & aunt, Benjamin & Malissa (CROWNOVER) Phillips. In Llano Co, TX on December 3, 1884, John Henry Phillips married Mary Iberia (HAYNES) WALKER, the daughter of Charles HAYNES and Rebecca DUNCAN. Henry Phillips was the son of John P. Phillips and Permelia STALLINGS, married January 20, 1810 in Logan Co, KY, thereafter making their home in Posey Co, IN. Permelia Stallings (c. 1792-1839) was the daughter of Wright Stallings (1760-1836) and Polly WESTRAY (c. 1765-1823) of Franklin Co, NC who moved to Chatham Co, NC in 1800 and settled next door to John P. Phillips. Polly's parents, Benjamin WESTRAY and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth SAWYER Westray, had moved from Franklin Co, NC to Chatham Co, NC about 1798, along with Elizabeth's son, John Sawyer. Benjamin Westray died in Chatham Co 1817 naming his daughter, Polly "Stallion" in his will. Wright Stallings sold his land on Beaver Creek adj. John Phillips in December 1807 (John Sawyer witness), and John Phillips sold his land March 1808. Wright Stallings appeared on the Logan Co, KY tax list 1809, with Phillips & Stallings moving to Posey Co, IN 1810-1811. Benjamin Westray's son, Simon, moved with Wright Stallings and John P. Phillips to Logan Co, KY and settled on Muddy Creek near John & Charity Bird, Willis Webb and Benjamin, John & William Simmons. Simon Westray died in Logan Co 1817, Wm. Simmons & Willis Webb appraisers. The father of Wright Stallings was Moses Stallings, b. c. 1729 in Chowan Precinct of Upper Parrish, Nansemond Co, VA and died October 18, 1794 in Nash Co, NC, having migrated to Granville/Bute/Franklin County about 1767. Moses Stallings was the son of Elias & Susannah (DENBY?) Stallings of Bertie Co, NC. The father of Elias Stallings has not yet been proved, but Elias is more likely the son of John Stallings who had settled in 1704 on Middle Swamp of Bennetts Creek, now near the town of Gates in Gates Co, NC. In 1723, Elias & Susannah Stallings bought land on Cypress Swamp at Saram Creek "the Banks of Italy" near the town of Gates, John Denby witness. Other Stallings lived nearer Corapeake than Gates. John P. Phillips (b. 1770-1774, d. aft 1840) was possibly the son of James Phillips of the 1790 Chatham Co, NC census near Isham Johnson, Blumer Wilson, John Tedder, Michael Wilson & Burwell Williams. John P. Phillips was most likely married 3 times, his 1st wife unknown, his 2nd wife probably Permelia's elder sister (per family lore), his 3rd wife being Permelia Stallings who attempted to divorce him in 1821. Permelia left her husband in 1829 and went with her married daughters to Clay Co, IL, taking her young children with her. The law was that if a woman left her husband's bed & board for 3 consecutive years, she could legally become a "femme sole" and be free to remarry. On August 3, 1833, Permelia Stallings married Thomas LEVITT and removed to Effingham Co, IL where she gave birth to Lorenzo Dow Levitt. John P. Phillips remained with his son, James, in Posey Co, IN. Am cooking some pork stew meat I bought today, maybe when I get hungry today there will be something to eat because its a cooking day it appears because I noticed last nite there was nothing else after I ate the last Yes, those little cups were in my oak cabinet. Those are hand painted blue bonnets on them. I thought the kids could drink hot choc out of them for a treat being crock it should stay warm a while longer than a regular cup-but does it last long anyway. I can't believe it but I had already forgotten I had sent you anything. Been an awful lot of thinking and doing here I guess. I was talking to Bran tonite if he had talked to Diana's father about putting in a new back door-he said no, he hadn't talked to him, he then said Mom, I just bought it Friday, this is only Monday. A gas plumbing man is going by the Angle house tomorrow and going to call me tonite and tell me how much he will charge for two new gas outlets, hook up hot water heater and new line from tank to under house. IF I don't keep after him things will be much slower than I like. Bran said utilities are supposed to be on by 4pm Tues afternoon, I need to call him and tell him on the way home he needs to stop by and check to make sure there are no water leaks not being caught by containers before I get there maybe Wed. Today I need to get laundry done and some cooking done so later this week I can spend time over there and since I am so tired when I get home I had better have something cooked up. In fact I may cook all day. I made some tuna fish salad last nite, the bread we made the other day is good but it still didn't taste right with the tuna fish, well, knowing me I ain't gonna waste it-the tuna salad so will boil some pasta and make a tuna salad with it. I didn't put any pickles in it so will add green peas to the salad and some chopped onion, ought to be pretty good-well, it will be something filling when I am hungry. No Melba isn't moving away, if anything she will be stubborn and stay living where she is but I can't be running 46 miles every week to take her to grocery store when he vehicle is no longer running either and I will not let her use my car, she would have fenders dented pretty quick. I swear she sees just how close she can get to anything with her pickup. Bran finally made it to Bills tonite for a table trade. Bill said he wanted a smaller, not round kitchen table and if anyone would trade he would be willing. WEll, Bill had a round over a 100 year old, 5 leg Oak table one can put a leaf in. I told Bran Diana would want it, plus it was worth some big money, I told Diana and she said yes so the trade was tonite finally. Melba wanted that table so bad but Bill wouldn't trade with her. You know thinking about it I need to get going on taking the fencing over there and get started on that, will have to rely on others to pound posts to tie fencing on and need to do that before it gets really cold. I may call Bill tomorrow and see about getting time set up. that would be a good thing to do on a Sat if Bill is willling, I could get Bradley on a Sat to help if he doesn't have a soccer game. I think Bradley has his driving license now, anyway Sunday when he was getting ready to pull the carpeting down to burn pile, I yelled, Bradley, why don't you move my car out of the way-like a bullet he flew to the car, I laughed, when they first get their license they will drive anywhere no matter why, he backed it back up later so I wouldn't have to walk so far without me even telling him-so cute they are when they first drive. They will go to the store for you 6 times in an hour if they get to drive...... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Jane Phillips-Matz" To: Sent: Friday, October 20, 2006 6:08 PM Subject: Re: [PHILLIPS] Early Kentucky Phillips Dear Carol, Seeing your Phillips note, I'd like to mention two men named Charles and John PHILLIPS, who were in Kentucky in the early 1800s. My gr-gr-grandfather, Charles PHILLIPS, was born in North Carolina, married Jemima (her maiden name HARDY), who was from Craven County, NC, with a very, very well-documented line of ancestors in the PHILLIPS family as well as in the HARDY family. (In other words, Jemima's huband was Charles PHILLIPS, her mother was Mary PHILIPS from Craven County, NC; and her father was John HARDY.) And Jemima [Hardy] Phillips was the granddaughter of John PHILLIPS, who mentioned her in his Craven County NC will in the late 1700s and was himself born and baptized in Virginia in 1726. I don't want to bore you to death, but it's important to say that all this is thoroughly documented, unlike a lot of things on the Internet. My father, William Mason PHILLIPS, was born in Franklin County KY. All good wishes, Mary Jane Phillips in New York City ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Lang" To: Sent: Friday, October 20, 2006 5:19 PM Subject: [PHILLIPS] Early Kentucky Phillips Can anyone identify the Charles Phillipsand John Phillips in Captain Benjamin Logan's Company near Logan's Stiation abt 1779? Other names lead me to believe that some of these went on to Livingston Co, KY and downward to Caldwell, Trigg, Calloway and Graves Cos. Is this the John bc 1789 husband of Nancy that is in early Hickman Co, KY (parent of several of the above counties)? My greatgrandfather was Jacob Phillips died between 1881 and 1900 census. Wife, Mary Story(bn 1839), was from Graves Co, and there is a Jacob Phillips that according to the 1870 census is dead....and couldn't have married a dead man and had 2 children. Other alternative is that she married a much younger man, Jacob Jr(bn abt 1856). Also, is there a site that I can send my picture of Jake for other Phillips to see?
