    3. After re-reading Dennis' post, I understand your response. Of course, when I read it the first time, I immediately understood him to mean ethnicity rather than the etymology of the surname. We don't often rely on etymology to immediately connotate ethnicity in the U.S. - our history won't allow it (with colonization being just as rampant elsewhere, I can't imagine too many other countries have this luxury in their genealogical research either, do they?). So I immediately assumed he wasn't talking about the origin of the surname. Hopefully Peggy and Dennis understood each other better than the rest of us! ;) As for my use of the word indian, hopefully I didn't offend anyone. No one I know that is indian actually calls themselves native american. But native american IS the more politically correct word to use, as Sharon said. Best to everyone! I promise not to post anymore on this! ;) Sherri captbrian <[email protected]> wrote: Being a Brit., the word 'Indian' means from India to me - I've been there and never met a Phillips - but I realise that it means what I call red indian over in US. Nevertheless an indian person may well call himself Phillips but that no more makes Phillips an 'indian' name than my calling myself Geronimo would make Geronimo a Welsh name. Good will to all, Bryan Quoting Sharon Cobb : > lol > > I thought we had this round not long ago? > > Just because a name didn't start Native American doesn't mean it didn't end > up there! :) > > Tootles > Sharon > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Sherri" > To: > Sent: Tuesday, November 28, 2006 6:01 PM > Subject: Re: [PHILLIPS] Rebecca Phillips Walls > > > > Capt. - > > > > Carl is one of many indian folks with the last name Phillips in the U.S. > Take a visit anywhere in the southern part of the country (NC, VA, GA, TN, > MO, OK, AR, TX), and you'll meet indian people with the last name Phillips. > In OK alone, there are PLENTY of people with the last name. > > > > The name may be welsh, but that doesn't mean everyone who has the last > name is or was ever welsh. > > > > Sherri Phillips > > > > Carl Phillips wrote: > > > > My name is Phillips and I am a registered member of > > the Choctaw tribe. > > Carl > > > > > > > > > > > > --- captbrian wrote: > > > > > Phillips is not Indian. > > > > > > > > > Bryan Phillips > > > > > > Quoting [email protected]: > > > > > > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to > > > this mailing list. > > > > > > > > Surnames: Witsman > > > > Classification: Query > > > > > > > > Message Board URL: > > > > > > > > > > > > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/nNABAIB/6186.2 > > > > > > > > Message Board Post: > > > > > > > > Dear Peggy, > > > > > > > > Hi, my name is Dennis Witsman and Mary Witsman is > > > the daughter of Conrad and > > > > Mary Witsman. No need to go out of your way to unsub and/or keep track of offenders. If we own computers, we should have enough sense to learn/know how to use them. We can be our own filters.
