One newspaper report (presumably written by the wife of Stanley Cook) indicates that a part of the Cook Homestead, located near McGirk, Missouri, was originally owned by Thomas Phelan, Jr. 2. Another article (written by same) indicates that "The Cook homeplace includes land which was first settled in 1831 by Thomas Phelan and in 1832 by Washington Cook. 3. Other accounts indicate that this land was later purchased by Cook in settlement for back taxes. The question remains: What happened to Thomas Phelan (Jr)? It is noteworthy that Thomas Phelan, Sr. died in Fayetteville, Arkansas during 1838.
