Glenda: Since the Irish immigrant, John Phelan, came to America in 1793, it is probable that his son Senator James Phelan was born after that date because: (1) if born before l793 James would have been too old to have been active during the Civil War and an active lawyer after the war; (2) the birth of his grandson in l883 suggests that the senator was born 50 or 60 years earlier in the 1820s or l830s. If the senator had been born in Ireland before l793, he would have been at least 80 in 1783 and would probably have been the child's great-grandfather. If you have any comments on these conclusions, please let me know. Thanks for your help. Dean B. Mahin DUMahin@aol.com
No, I agree with you. I, and I think the list, would be interested in his comments regarding the Civil War if you wouldn't mind sharing it with us. Are we talking about the same Senator James Phelan? The one I'm talking about, James DuVal Phelan, mayor of San Francisco at the time of the great earthquake, was born in 1861 and died in 1930. See http://www.sfmuseum.org/hist1/phelanbio.html I am not aware of any other Senator James Phelan. It seems quite unlikely his father came to America in 1793. Yet the latter is a "fit" for the person who was the brother of my great great grandfather, James Phelan, because (a) 1793 is plausible and (b) he came from Co Laois (Queens) where Phelans do come from but not with the abundance of Cork, Kilarney and Waterford. Correction -- I note a reference to a Senator James Phelan, Mississippi Senator in first Confederate Congress, 1861-63]. See http://geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/1864/aldridge_letters.htm Confusing to say the least.
