I am not sure when my fathers family came to the states. My father was Charles Joseph Whelan born 8-30-20 in Pawtaucket RI. His parents were Sarah MURPHY Whalen and Charles WHALEN. I do know his father is from the Cork area. All their children's names were changed to Whelan. We have a very closed mouthed family and I am not privy to any other info.
