I found this excerp in "Irish Settlers in America" by Michael J. O'Brien - Vol. II Historical Items from Newspapers - pg 525 March 14, 1778 - Edward Phelan, Lieutenant of Colonel David Henley's Regiment of Foot then stationed at Providence, advertised for a deserter. Irish Pioneers in Hartford Co., Conn - pg 545 .............A local historian mentions "Thomas Feeland or Pheland, founder of a Suffield family in 1733," but states that "his origin is unknown" ("Documentary History of Suffield, Conn." by Hezekiah S. Sheldon, pg 274). His descendants spell the name "Phelon" butin the record of the birth of Thomas' adoped son on Dec 1, 1733, the name is written down "Joseph Pheland." There can be very little doubt that the correct name was Phelan, and it is entirely probable that the last mentioned was the Joseph Phelan who enlisted in Captain Trumble's company raised in Windsor the the French-English war in 1759.
