I concur with this spelling situation. In my searches I have found for the same family PHELAN, PHALAN, PHALEN, PHALON, and PHELON. What's a researcher to do? By the way, the same family in Ireland was WHELAN for one baptism, and PHELAN for the other four. AAUGH!
