I set the Phelan list up myself in 1998, then lo and behold Rootsweb (when bought out by Ancestry.com) set up the Phalen list on their own. When I saw it, I went in and asked to be the listmanager of it. Since no one had actually asked for this list, they let me adopt it. Occasionally, out of stupidity, I'll post a message to the Phalen list by mistake but I think I've got a handle on that now so everything I post goes to the PhElan list. But just in case senility takes over again, you might want to join both. You can do so by sending a message to PHELAN-L-request@rootsweb.com and put only the word subscribe in the body of the letter. There are 130 Phelan subscribers but less than 40 on the Phalen list. I just sent a message to the Phalen list asking them to join the Phelan list. I tried to get Rootsweb to cancel the Phalen list but they won't. Very confusing to me. Lately, ancestry.com is setting up a mailing list of every name possible and most of them don't have listmanagers, usually they just lay idle. So if you have an unusual surname, you might want to check rootsweb again to see if there is now a website. It doesn't cost anything (like it use to) to become listmanager, just a little extra time to keep the activity up. Glenda (listmanager)
