> Ken, I missed your reference to the years which the Griffith's data relates > to? My copy of the two e-mails didn't mention a date and I didn't get the original since it didn't contain the surname of Whelan or Phelan. BUT I wrote to that mailing list asking for the date and if I hear back I'll let you know. Thanks, Glenda

Funny how things like this happen but in today's mail I got a pamplet from Genealogical Publishing Co www.genealogical.com showing some books for sale and Griffith's Valuation of Ireland happened to be one of them so I'm sending the info to the list in case anyone wants to order it. "Richard Griffith and His Valuations of Ireland with an inventory of the Books of the General Valuation of Rateable Property in Ireland" by James R. Reilly. In 1825 geologist Richard Griffith was chosen to be Ireland's Boundary Surveyor. His appointment coincided with the government's determination to achieve a uniform system of land measuring and valuing for the purpose of eliminating various inequities in levying the 2 main forms of location taxation.....etc, etc. The contents of his valuations can be said to be divided into 2 parts. The first half treats the history and method used by Griffith in producing the valuation..........Facsimile illustrations of maps, memoirs, and other documents abound here. Although this is not a census, it provides the following info for each tenement in each townland: names of townland & occupiers; names of immediate lessors; description of tenement, acreage, valuation of land and building; and reference to the correspond maps in the first half. .............. The cost of the book is $21.95.
