    2. Here's some links if you believe that your ancestors came from Ireland to Canada before coming to USA................ Date: Thu, 27 Aug 1998 03:35:52 -0600 From: matt emerson <[email protected]> Subject: Irish in Canada The URL below will give you links to a number of Canadian sites including 5000 settlers from Wexford/Wicklow; the Peter Robinson Settlers; New Brunswick, St. John’s and PEI. Large numbers of Irish went to Canada because the fare was cheaper. Gross Ille was a quarantine station where many Irish immigrants died of ships fever, starvation, and lack of clothing on the voyages. A lot of the Irish didn’t want to stay in Canada because of British rule there and moved on the US as soon as they were able, but many settled in Canada on a permanent basis. St. Johns, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, the Chateauguay River valley of Quebec, and many localities in Ontario had Irish settlers. If anyone on the list had ancestors in the Chateauguay Valley (once Beauharnois, now Huntingdon County) Quebec, please write to me. A number of Irish went to Canada with the British Army in the 1795-1815 era; they were encouraged to settle along the border and be ready to fight for England in the event of border disputes with the US.
