I know of no Mass. connection. I believe that the immigrant was possible Scotch Irish and probably from the Ulster Phelan Clan. I think this because of the location they immigrated to and the era of the immigration. Also while I have no church records from the early family they are Presbyterian by the time they reach Tennessee. ----- Original Message ----- From: <HANDTHX82@cs.com> To: <PHELAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 11, 2000 1:46 PM Subject: Re: [PHELAN] Phelans NC/TN > My Family is primarily from the Fall River, Mass area. I'm looking for a Phelan family, lived in Brooklyn in late 1800's. Walter S. Phelan m. Laura M. Wood. Children, Walter, Ronald and Winfield. Walter the father died in 1904. He owned a haberdashery store on Wall Street. Does this ring a bell with anyone? RPhelan1@compuserve.com searching, Phelan, Foley, Wood, Vail, Laramee
I have run across a Walter A. Phelan in the 1890 New York City Directory. His occupation is listed as "men's furng", 56 Wall, H: 413 Sumner Ave, Brklyn. This info was listed under databases in Ancestry.com
I am still trying to make the connection back to Ireland and when I do, I'll know if there is a connection with you. Care to share your family's names that lived in Ireland before they went to Australia? Carol Phelan
Thanks very much for your note. I am seeing a lot of this explanation and will trace down every variation of the spelling in the future. Carol Phelan
My Family is primarily from the Fall River, Mass area. My Dad, Francis James Phelan (Frank) believes his parents came over from Ireland but their marriage license states they both were born in Fall River. Do you have any family in Mass? Carol Phelan
Thanks you for your information. I will add this to my database for future research. Let me know if I can be of assistance to you! Carol Phelan

My g-g-grandparents were Phelans and lived most of their lives in my home town in Connecticut. In searching the town records I found many references to them including marriage, birth of their children, death of the husband, etc. but I could never find a death notice for my gggrandmother, Bridget Phelan. Hi All, I can certainly understand the frustration going on with the constant e-mails on Phelans. Some join lists just looking to make connection with a cousin, others for info. Two things: I'm putting this info up with the hopes that it does help someone. I actually got a Phelan lead here on the list that helped me out greatly, I believe it was Glenda who posted it. However, it may help you if your subscribed in list mode to unsubscribe and resubscribe in digest mode. just insert "-request" after the -L in the address. leave the subject line blank and put "unsubscribe" only here in the body. To resubscribe to digest mode e-mail "Phelan-D-request" and do the same but put subscribe instead of unsubscribe in the body. These rules apply to most all the rootsweb mail lists and this may help some. Secondly, I'm pretty sure there is a Whelan mailing list for those who might not know. I do these lookups during a period in the morning where my computer is locked up computing and I really can't use it for anything else intensive. So for 4 lists, Phelan,Donovan,Kinsella, Sheridan I run these names on the databases that are free for 10 days at ancestry.com. Sometimes I hit paydirt and other times there are none. I started running Phelans but have now found Phalens as well in the family (cousins). Mine are all from Nova Scotia. I don't run any other variations because a)time and b)I don't have Whelans. The good news is that like I said these databases are free for 10 days once posted so all of you have the ability to visit ancestry.com and on the right side you'll see links to recent databases. Glad to see a little activity on the Phelan list. I need to get back to work on my "tree." Thanks to you, Chris Doehring, for all your wonderful input!! Did you ever get in contact with Fr. Faherty? He knows a lot of stuff!! Kathleen Puls--glad to see another familiar name. Is this the time you were getting ready for your Ireland trip? Last year at this time I was ready to go. Oh, I wish I were going again this summer. I'll repost my family info and inquiries in the near future Patricia Phelan Dailey
As it was explained to me, both Phelan and Whelan translate back into the same word in Gaelic - O'Faolain . So, the priest, or govt. official who translated the gaelic name would - if putting it in English, choose either one. At that time, the precise spelling of names was not a necessary item. Frank Fitzgerald
This could be one of the reasons for the spelling variation of the name Phelan: My gg grandmother from the Radestown area of Co. Kilkenny was Catherine PHELAN - according to the parish records in Co. Kilkenny. Her name also appeared on the 1925 Iowa State census as Catherine WHALEN. Here is the best explanation from a Bill Jackman from Waterford, Ireland, that I have heard yet as to why the two names are interchangeable: "Yes the names Whelan and Phelan are one and the same. The name in Irish is O`Faolain with a stroke over last a,which lengthens it,I`ll try and spell it phonetically for you, fweylawinn,so its easy to understand where whelan came from ( or Whalen )" Kathleen Maryland HANDTHX82@cs.com wrote: > > My father's family is Whalen, Whelan, and Phelan. I am no expert, but I understand there are two spellings in Ireland, Whelan and Phelan. My gr-grandfather was shown sometimes as Whelan and Sometimes as Phelan in various records. A few years ago while in Ireland I checked the two phone books for Ireland, one for Dublin, the second for the rest of Ireland. there were about 200 Phelan spellings in both books, none other then that. I understood there that Whelan is used interchangeably with Phelan, although Whelan is used about twice as often as Phelan, they are the same name. My own name is spelled Phalin, but that is an american derivation. Larry Phalin
No. I never saw that spelling variation. Looks like I'm going to be learning how to use the soundex soon., Thanks for the tip. Carol Phelan-Smith
My father's family is Whalen, Whelan, and Phelan. I am looking for persons who know any reason or story the Whalen/Phelans have for the name changes....a rift in the family, starting a new branch? Our Phelan/Whalens are located primarily in Fall River, Mass. In particular I am looking for connections to the Edward Whalen/Eleanor Roe family and beyond. Thanks for the variation of Whealan. Haven't seen that one yet.
