I am not sure when my fathers family came to the states. My father was Charles Joseph Whelan born 8-30-20 in Pawtaucket RI. His parents were Sarah MURPHY Whalen and Charles WHALEN. I do know his father is from the Cork area. All their children's names were changed to Whelan. We have a very closed mouthed family and I am not privy to any other info. Hi; Just a coincidence. My grandmother was Margaret Lynch and she married John Phelan. Both of their families had come to St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada in the early 1850s and Margaret and John were born in Canada shortly after they arrived here. They had a large family and many descendants are still living in St. Catharines. Best wishes. John On the north shore of Lake Superior. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary A Austin <maryaa@juno.com> To: <PHELAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2000 8:14 PM Subject: [PHELAN] Whelan/Phelan > Dear Jo, > My g grandmother was Catherine Lynch of Co Cork. m John Whelan about > 1856. Chris, I am a Whalen,County Waterford, Ireland, so g.grand father Martin Whalen said, I subscribed to your site because of a phase that came down from a neighbor of Martin and Ellen's. They offered her a ride in their wagon and as she got in she said"Are you the O'Phelan's?" and as g grandma Ellen said " and she put her leg in me clock" I have the clock with the broken glass but can't find where in County Waterford they were born, I got record from churches but nothing matches up. I am going for ideas, I have just about given up. JO - There could be a connection. Do you know where in County Kilkenny your Catherine Phelan was from?? Mine married Charles Jackman in 1827 and they both died in the mid 1840's, probably in the Leapstown area (a few miles northwest of Kilkenny City). Four of their children, including my great grandfather Patrick Jackman, emigrated to Iowa in the 1850's. Hi, thanks for the info from the 1890 NYC directory. that is definitely the Walter I am searching for, is anyone else searching that family. I am trying to find info on his father, Thomas d. about 1850. Thanks. Rene'
Do you mean Thomas died about 1850 or is his middle initial "D"? I have a Thomas Edmond Phelan but do not know his dates. Then I have a Thomas Phelan born in 1726, married to Elizabeth Howard Day. They had two sons, Thomas and Jesse (of record). Then I have a Thomas Phelan from Arkansas who had applied for a pension for service in the civil war but was denied because he lacked a full six months of continuous service.
Go figure. I went back to start searching another name and realized I missed one. Sorry. Hi list, I am looking for any connections to a Patrick Phelan, born abt 1854 in Ireland (no idea where yet). He married Elizabeth O'Hara on April 15, 1877 in Cambridge, MA. They had at least one son, Richard, born Dec 27, 1886. I can find no further info on Elizabeth. Somewhere along the way, Patrick married Mary Ann Walsh who died in 1907 in Franklin, MA. Patrick died in 1911 in Franklin, MA, where his son Richard had also settled. Patrick's parents were Richard Phelan and Elizabeth, both of Ireland. Any connections? Donna Guglielmi Franklin, MA Donna184@ncounty.net
The real debate, with all due respect, should be: How do you pronounce Phelan? Any Irishman from the emerald isle I've ever spoken to pronounces it (like I do) Phee-lan. It's how my ancestors (who hailed from Co. Laois) pronounced it when they reached North America before 1820. Others insist on pronouncing it Phay-lan. One dubious authority on the subject told me that the lace curtain Irish call it Phee-lan, while the shanty Irish call it Phay-lan. When I asked who the lace curtain Irish were, I was told they're people who have fruit on their table even when no one's sick. Can we have some answers, please?
