    3. Hi Phelan researchers, Believe John and I have corresponded before and we are cousins <g>. If anyone is interested in our line of Phelan's, which did include several Pierce Phelan's, they can go to my web site and look at my Phelan Genealogy report. This is for FREE use for any Phelan researchers, however I do ask that any of my material not be included in any site that one has to pay to view. I am a firm believer that all of my work of almost 27 years, should be freely given and one shouldn't have to pay to view it. Otherwise feel free to download what you want. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~makaylor/index.html Mary Ann >Hi John, >My grandfather and his father, my great grandfather were both named Pierce >Phelan. 3. Hi John, My grandfather and his father, my great grandfather were both named Pierce Phelan. I don't know anything about great grandfather Pierce except that he was godfather to my dad, Herbert Phelan Sr. who was born in Peekskill New York. The older Pierce I think lived in New York City since he married a Brooklyn woman named Julia Lang. I don't know his place of origin but I think he would have been born around the early to mid 1860's. The younger Pierce was an iron moulder who died young of lung problems and left a widow and 3 small children, one of whom was my dad. I think he was born and raised in New York City since his wife was from there. He would have been born on or a couple of years before 1890. I'd sure like to explore this a bit further. Maybe you'll find some new cousins. Herb Phelan Jr. John Garner wrote: > My great great grandfather, Pierce Phelan, and his wife, Mary Dwyer (or > O'Dwyer) came to Canada in 1852 from Co. My branch of the family remained in the St. Catharines, ON area but some of Pierce's descendants moved on to New York, Illinois, and Ohio. Later, descendants of Pierce have scattered all over the US. 1. [PHELAN] Any O'Phelan's???
    2. I'm hoping to find anyone researching the O'Phelan family, in particular: Thomas O'Phelan (County Waterford) m. Honor D'Arcy (County Clare) immigrated to New Orleans (1830-50??) and eventually to Minnesota (approx. 1855). 2 children: Patrick D'Arcy O'Phelan (m. Julia Harvey) and Julia O'Phelan (m. fnukn/Littleton). Patrick O'Phelan had 10 children, born between 1865 and 1885. Any help appreciated! Nancy Davis nmdavis18@aol.com

    3. My grandfather's brother went to Australia in the 1870's. His name was William Phelan(Whelan) - we're not sure which name he used - my grandfather used Whelan, but another brother, Thomas, used Phelan - Thomas went to Australia (Melbourne) for about 5 years and then returned to Ireland. He met up with his brother while there, but no one ever heard of William again - his parents were Honora Keating and James Whelan. Keatings also went to Australia. Mary

    3. Hi: >From what I understand Whelan/Phelan is really the same name. My grandfather was James Whelan - his sister was Alice Phelan and his brother Thomas Phelan. On his parents' marriage certificate they are Whelan and the baptismal records all say Whelan. From what I've read sometimes people used Whelan and sometimes Phelan - there was no rift - my father's family was close and his brother lived with them the last few years of his life. I always check both Phelan and Whelan. Mary

    2. yes, one will be the residence and the other the work address. If you go to the website I put up for each of the lists, assuming it is still free, you should be able to either a) discern a pattern of home residences and work addresses by where they're listed or b) pull up the database and there may be a description as to what column is what. You've noticed that these are all approximately 1890. Since the 1890 census is mostly destroyed thru neglect, they are accumulating these directories as a sort of pseudo census. If you have problems getting to the database description go to www.ancestry.com and at the far right there will be a box in a column saying recent databases. Click on that. Hope this helps, Chris PS one more note. Old directories would list both the individual's work and home place. I believe this was to increase sales to businesses for the purpose of collections of bills due. I use to do collections in college and we used what was called a Polk directory. You could look up people by their street or phone number, which might be kind of nice later on so you could see who else was living near your ancestor. Don't know how far they go back but I've seen them available at the local library.

    1. [PHELAN] PHELAN/CUMMINS - Wexford, Ire > Canada > NYC
    2. All, I've been on the list from the beginning but haven't posted often. So here's my PHELAN info: PHELAN, Thomas b.ca 1833 probably Wexford, Ireland father: unknown, possibly William WHELAN of Haggard, Rathroe, Wexford mother: unknown married: circa 1855 to Bridget CUMMINS b.ca 1837, Haggard, Rathroe, Wexford; d/o John & Ellen CUMMINS died: 1880, New York City, NY, USA Immigrated: circa 1855 to Canada, location unknown Children: John Joseph, b.ca 1857, Canada, location unknown - died 1887 in NYC, unmarried, no descendents Mary Ellen, b.ca 1859, Canada, location unknown - died 1935, unmarried, no descendents Anastasia, b.ca 1862, Canada, location unknown - m.1888 to Wm. H. CARR, NY City - d.1901 NYC; Wm. H. CARR d.1904 NYC - Anastasia's 4 children were raised by Mary Ellen This family was in New York City by 1870. I know that Bridget CUMMINS is from Haggard, Rathroe, Wexford. Also, my grandmother (dau of Anastasia PHELAN) had as a baptismal sponsor, William WHEALAN. A review of Griffith Valuation Index shows one William WHELAN located in Haggard, Rathroe, Wexford. So it is possible that Thomas is from the same townland as his wife, Bridget. Any help with Thomas PHELAN's parents would be appreciated. I am also interested in locating the descendents of Anastasia's sons, Bill and "Joe" CARR. Thank you. Loretta
