I am working on a new book that will review the reactions of Europeans who were in America during the Civil War (as immigrants, foreign officers, journalists, or visitors) to major Civil War issues (secession, slavery, emancipation, and the election and reelection of Abraham Lincoln). I have found several interesting reactions by James Phelan, a Confederate Senator from Mississippi, but cannot use them unless he was an immigrant. I would be very glad to heard from anyone who has biographic information on Senator Phelan (or any other Irish-born Phelan who was in the Union or Confederate armies). The new book (as yet untitled) will complement my recent book on the international dimensions of the Civil War, "One War at a Time." Author interviews are on two websites: Abraham Lincoln Online -- http://www.netins.net/showcase/creative/lincoln/books/mahin.htm -- and Civil War Book News -- http://www.cw-book-news.com/q-a/mahin-qa.html. I found this excerp in "Irish Settlers in America" by Michael J. O'Brien - Vol. II Historical Items from Newspapers - pg 525 March 14, 1778 - Edward Phelan, Lieutenant of Colonel David Henley's Regiment of Foot then stationed at Providence, advertised for a deserter. Irish Pioneers in Hartford Co., Conn - pg 545 .............A local historian mentions "Thomas Feeland or Pheland, founder of a Suffield family in 1733," but states that "his origin is unknown" ("Documentary History of Suffield, Conn." by Hezekiah S. Sheldon, pg 274). His descendants spell the name "Phelon" butin the record of the birth of Thomas' adoped son on Dec 1, 1733, the name is written down "Joseph Pheland." There can be very little doubt that the correct name was Phelan, and it is entirely probable that the last mentioned was the Joseph Phelan who enlisted in Captain Trumble's company raised in Windsor the the French-English war in 1759.

The following Phelan/Phelon names are mentioned in a Revolutionary War Pension record. Does anyone have this info and would they be interested in posting it to the mailing list??? I'm curious as to what it says. PHELAN, Jerremiah Jesse John Nicholas Thomas PHELON, Ann Edward Patrick Peter
Hi, Well it took awhile but I finally got around to adding my PHELAN line to my FTM home page. I was waiting for FTM version 8.0 to come out because it had a few new features to aid in creating home pages. You can see my PHELAN line by going to www.familytreemaker.com/users/g/a/r/John-J-Garner/ and then linking on "Genealogy Report: Descendants of Pierce Phelan." If you see any connections with your own families I would like to hear from you. Free use of this material is permitted but I insist that none of this report be put on any material that is for sale.
Probably a nickname for Patricia. I show a Patricia Phelan married to a Thomas M. Patton. Her parents were James Lloyd Phelan and Mary Malone. Patricia has one son that I know of, Thomas Patton. Patricia had two sisters: Wanda Sue Phelan who died at 1 yr. 6 MOS old, and Diane Kathy (Butchie) Phelan. That's all I have on them. Sorry, no dates. This infor off of a family tree that was censored for privacy so these may be living people.
I have just run across a Mrs. Patsy Phelan, died August 24, 1916. She died of Typhoid during an outbreak in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois. I have a lot of Phelan's in this area but I don't show any that maried a Patsy. Does she show up in anyone's else's tree? Thanks. Dawn

I've recently found my Phelan family in Michigan. For several years I've only know my g g grandmother, Anna Phelan. I've found the names of her parents John P. Phelan and Catherine Newman, daughter of William Newman, of Waterford, Ireland. The emigrated to Toronto, then Detroit before 1850. John P Phelan was apparently a sea captain and died at sea in 1862. Their most famous child was Judge James Phelan, Detroit Recorders court judge, 1899-1914. Any link to other Phelans would be a real boon. Brent Brent R. I'm sorry to post this but I need any help possible. I use Family Tree and in looking at the timeline (which I never knew I had before) I thought I was deleting individuals from the timeline but actually deleted all the individuals out of my group (all 1200+ of them). And the backup tape broke in the restoration. The files is still 23 megs even though it shows only 2 individuals in the index. Does anybody know if a) I can recover my individuals and b) How to do it if possible? So as not to clog the list with any replies I ask that you e-mail me directly at: doehring@ix.netcom.com I am severely bummed out right now and looking at probably 3 months worth of work just re-inputting my tree. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, Chris Doehring St. Louis, MO

I'm so glad to see some activity on the Phelan-L. Have you ever heard the this story told in your family? It's our oral traditiion, and not all that many years ago, but I've never been able to find colaboration. Eight brothers came to US during the Irish famine c.1848-50 by ship. Got to St. Louis, MO, and split up to make their own ways. Didn't stay in contact with each other. My g-gf was John Phelan. He married Kate McGrath (m13JAN1866) in Quincy, IL, lived in southeast Iowa, and drowned (d27JUN1877) in a logging accident on the Mississippi at a fairly young age. The eldest of John Phelan's sons was Frank, b.1868. He "went west" and they didn't keep in contact. My grandfather, Lawrence, was b.1869. Other children were Elizabeth (Lizzie), b1871; Mary (Mayme), b1873; and Robert, b1877, who served in the Spanish-American War. Kate was left to raise these children alone. 1) I would like to find the place of origin in Ireland of my ggrandparents: 1. John Phelan (b ca. 1832 in Ire; d 27June 1877 Keokuk IA) 2. Katherine (Kate) McGrath (m John Phelan) (b. Ire; d 26Mar1920 Keokuk IA) 3. Richard Bannon (b 25Nov1843 Ire; d 26Mar1902) 4. Johanna Byrne (m Richard Bannon ) (b 2Nov1850 ire; d 23Mar1907) 2.) I would like to find anyone else with the "eight brothers" story in their family history. Patricia Phelan Dailey now in CA

My greatgrandfather and his sister arrived as orphan children from Co. Laois in c. 1825. Eventually they ended up in Lewiston, NY, where they raised their respective families. They all branched out after that, mainly to Canada, where we still are. Please excuse my previous message, I leaped before I looked. I don't have the Phelan Genealogy report on my site yet, one of those things I put on the back burner and didn't realize I hadn't put it online. I will work on getting it online soon, so check back at the site. Maybe before the day if over. There are Phelan's mentioned in the Tedrow Genealogy report, but doesn't go back to the Pierce Phelans.
