    2. Charles Phelan
    3. This sounds very interesting! Can you tell me more about this person - James or John from Co Queens? My family came from there and my great-great grandfather James Phelan may have been the person in question or his brother. He was one of two brothers who came over in the early 1800s. We have a clear picture of his descendents, but not of the brother. My family has been trying to find a link with the James D. Phelan, who was the famous mayor of San Francisco in the early 1900s, and who definitely came from Co. Queens. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kenneth Womack" <ken-womack@worldnet.att.net> To: <PHELAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 06, 2001 8:11 PM Subject: [Phelan] James Phelan > Sorry but just read my message and realized I made a mistake. 3. Dean, I have a copy of an article titled "Biographical Sketch of Hunt Phelan" published in The National Cyclopedia. A brief synopsis follows: William Richardson (Hunt) PHELAN was a lawyer born in Louisville, Ky on 10-8-1873, son of George Richardson Phelan and Julia Tate Hunt. His parents were temporarily in KY having gone there from Memphis, TN to escape a yellow fever epidemic. His godparents were Jefferson DAVIS and Mrs. Davis. His great grandfather was James PHELAN, a native of Marysborough, Queens (now Leix) Co., Ireland, a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, a soldier and patriot in the Irish cause, who came to the US in 1793, settling first in NY city. At different times he lived in New Brunswick, NJ, Baltimore, MD, Richmond, VA & Huntsville, AL being in the banking business. JAMES PHELAN, who married Eliza Jones Moore, was a noted lawyer in Mississippi and Alabama, a senator from MS in the Confederate congress in 1862-63, judge advocate of the Confederate States, 1864-65 and after the Civil War practiced law in Memphis, TN. His gggrandson, Bill Day, lives here in Memphis, TN Hope this will help prove that he was born in the US.

    3. Since I have rejoined the Phelan list I thought I better send in a query on who I'm looking for. Mary Feland m. Enoch McKinney (McKenney or Kenney) in Lincoln Co., KY, 20JUN1795. The marriage bond was signed by John Feland. Enoch had a land entry in Green Co. in 1798, which was on Harrod's Fork at Crocus. (branch of Cumberland River). This, due to county line changes, changed to Adair Co. KY and they remained there until 1818 and then apparently moved on to Boone Co. MO. I have been searching for several years and although I have pretty good info on where their son Stephen McKinney went I lost Enoch in MO after 1822 and never found out anything about Mary. 1. [Phelan] NIHEN-NIHAN wanted
    2. Joe Nihen
    3. Hello Listers, I'm the new kid on the block! I've been researching my surname (NIHEN) for over 30 years and was recently informed that a group of NIHANs or NIHENs lived in the Niagara-Ontario region. My surname is just "odd enough" to suggest a probable link between my family, living in the coal fields of Pennsylvania, and the Niagara-Ontario group. The problem is that although I have a folder filled with names, dates, and information regarding the "Canadian Cousins", I cannot make a link. My family extends back to my great grandfather, John Nihen, whom I can trace to Margam, Wales, in 1851. The family "story" is that John was born in Ireland (1843) and emigrated at a young age. I do have John's first marriage certificate ... 1864 Aberavon (Neath), Wales ... married to a Mary CLEMENS. John and Mary arrived in Audenried, Pennsylvania, in 1869. John remarried to Margaret Ann ELLIOTT, my great grandmother, and relocated to Lansford, Pennsylvania, my home. My reason for writing to this list is that two persons on the NIAGARA- ONT list gave me information that a PHELAN family was related to the NIHEN/NIHAN group. I'm hoping to find a relative and a connection. I do not know if my great grandfather had siblings. I have found, however, the names Michael, William, Cornelius, and David Nihen in various records from Wales and a grave near Audenreid, PA ... no one knows anything about these folks. (John's father, Daniel, was born in Ireland, according to John's 1907 death record.) Does this ring a bell with anyone? Until learning of the St. Catharines, Ontario, group, I believed the only location of my surname was in the coal pits of PA. Any leads or suggestions will be much appreciated. I would be absolutely thrilled to find family ... dead or alive! Thanks, Joe Nihen Pennsylvania Researching: NIHEN, NIHAN, ELLIOTT, FETKO/SPACK
