    3. Ancestry.com has a free search of the following book until 4/7/01. I found 30 Whelan and I think it was about 7 Phelans. NO Whalen or Phalens. Website address at the bottom. Glenda AUSTRALIAN CONVICT INDEX, 1788-1868 The accepted authoritative work on Australian convicts is Charles Bateson's "Convict Ships" (Library of Australian History, out of print). In it, Bateson states that 160,151 total convicts were sent to Australia. Although most of the convicts were from the British Isles, some were also from various British colonies. The British Government first sent convicts to New South Wales, Australia in 1788, after the American Revolution. But NSW refused to accept convicts after 1842 because the population had grown after the success of free immigration. Convicts were first sent to Tasmania (formerly Van Diemens Land) in 1803. Western Australian accepted male convicts only from 1850 to 1868. [An attempt was also made to send convicts to Port Phillip (Melbourne, Victoria), but this failed.] This database is an index compiled from the convict indexes for each state through numerous publications, as well as from many Internet sites. It gives the name of the convict, his/her age or birth year, birthplace or place of trial, occupation, marital status, ship, and year of arrival. The database includes more than 48,000 names of convicts sent to Australia between 1788 and 1868. Source Information: Reakes, Janet, comp. "Australian Convict Index, 1788-1868" [database online] Provo, UT: Ancestry.com, 2001. Original data: "1788-1868 Convict Records." Records kept at the New South Wales State Records Office, P.O. Box R625, Royal Exchange, NSW 2000; at the Archives Office of Tasmania, 77 Murray St., Hobart, TAS 7000; and at the State Records Office of Western Australia, Alexander Library, Perth Cultural Centre, Perth, WA 6000. 1. Re: [Phelan] Ireland Phelan help
    2. Henry Fielding
    3. Hi Dawn, The answers to your queries are:- a) Did Ireland have nick names to areas, such as Windy City? The answer is no as people traveled only in the proximity of their area. b) Did County Boundaries change? No, as they were tribal areas. c) I mentioned that Robert was not a common Christian name because it is of Norman derivation. Therefore the child has been named out of respect to the settlers family on the estate which they lived. In Ireland, at that time, you would give your address conventionally as Townland, then the Parish and then the County. Therefore, to follow the address properly, it states that they lived in the townland of Donoughmore, in the parish of Georgetown, in the county of Kilkenny. Here we have the difficulty:- Georgestown is in Waterford and not Kilkenny. There is no Georgetown in Kilkenny. Donoughmore, is a parish in Cork. There are three Donaghmore's elsewhere (Laois, Meath and Tyrone). Note: The spelling is different in Donoughmore to Donaghmore. The Phelans I referred to are from Upper Ossory, whilst the Phelans in Waterford, Kilkenny and Cork are from the Deisi. Although they have the same name they come from two different families. I think that Robert came from the Deisi as they spread into Kilkenny and Cork from Waterford. The most credible answer is that, since there is only one Donoughmore in Ireland, he came from that Parish lying halfway between Macroom and Mallow. The possibility is that Georgetown is the Townland within the Parish of Donoughmore in the County of Cork. To research the information you require go to:- http://cork.local.ie/genealogy/ Good hunting, Henry. ----- Original Message ----- From: <HASBENN@aol.com> To: <PHELAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 18, 2001 11:11 PM Subject: [Phelan] Ireland Phelan help > I've been transcribing a probate for JEREMIAN PHELAN today. NJ Queries Forum URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/NJ/Hudson/12833 Subject: Whalen-Hoboken FD I have a James Whalen marrying Julia Davin (one of my collateral lines) on Dec 20 1893 at Our Lady of Grace Church in Hoboken, NJ. James was the fire commissioner of the Hoboken FD (I don't know the years he served). He was the son of Jeremiah Whalen and Catherine Dooley (spelling?). James and Julia had children: Catherine, Virginia (m. Walter Kramer), James and I think a Julia also. The witnesses at their marriage were: William Whalen and Catherine Sweeney. Any of this ring a bell with you?

    3. For the new members just joining us, you can search the Phelan Mailing List Archives for prior messages by going to http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl . You'll have to put in the surname Phelan at 2 different places but keep going and you can get back to the 1998 archives when the list first started. I've been researching for about 20 years and copied everything I could find on the surname even though I couldn't connect it to my line at the time. Everything I had ever accumulated went on the list initially along with a lot of other's info. Chris in CA had a ton that she passed on to the list. Hopefully all of it is archived. Glenda
