FINIS CLOYD DEAD--Mrs. Martha Magruder-Cloyd, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Notley Magruder of southwest of town, died May 11, 1919, at a hospital in Billings, Mont., from infection following a slight operation. The body, accompanied by Mr. Cloyd, arrived Tuesday and was conveyed to Sharon Church where interment was made, the funeral services being conducted by the Rev. N. B. Green. Deceased was married to Finis Cloyd on June 23, 1912. They were the parents of two children--Ralph Notley, aged 4 years, and Willella Ray, aged 8 weeks--who with the father, survive. She also leaves her parents, two brothers--Rev. G. N. Magruder, Jr., of this place;(the second brother was not named) three sisters--Mrs. W. B. Petry, Marshall; Mrs. Lesslie Burton, Higbee; and Mrs. Fred PHELAN, Moberly. Mrs. Cloyd was converted at the early age of thirteen and united with the Ararat Baptist church. She was a consistent Christian, loved God and followed the Prince of Peace. She walked along life's pathway with God and when she entered the shadow He was with her. She has gone out from home and loved ones never to return, for she now abides in the heavenly mansions and has joined her loved ones in the eternal city of God. She shall be missed all the days that are to come, but for her to die was gain. As the flowers are touched by autumn's frosty fingers and they fold their petals and die, so death laid his hand on this little mother and she closed her eyes in peaceful sleep from which none ever wake to weep. Those from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Pemberton, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Pemberton, Mr. and Mrs. Walden, Hallsville; J. C. Green, Miss Edna Green, Mrs. A. M. Furnish, Mrs. Chas. Reiter, Moberly; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Maupin and daughter, Glasgow.

    1. [Phelan] New to list; greetings cousins!
    2. Hi cousins! I am new to this list. I have been researching the PHALAN name for two years now. I know that my great-grandfather, John T. Phalan (d. 8/1941 Rome NY) was born in Ireland on June 10, 1853. His father was James, and I visited his grave in Kilsheelan, Co. Tipperary. James died in March 1867. Phelan became Phalan in this country. I do not know when my great grandfather came over to America, but I do know he was naturalized (two applications!) in Boonville, Oneida County NY on October 25, 1882, and in Lowville, Lewis County NY on October 25, 1884. I would very much like to know what happened to John's siblings, esp. Bridget, Ellen, and Mary. I am enclosing a transcribed list which was dictated to my great-uncle William by his aunt Margaret who was also a sibling. If anyone else can fill in my gaps I would appreciate it. I can try and fill your gaps too if I can. This was dictated to William Phalan in 1913 by his aunt Margaret Phalan Keyes (#13). His father is #12. (Red italics mine - Mary) 2. Thomas Phalan died in Ireland 3. Michael " a country doctor of some importance, especially was his ability to cure running sores and ulcers- well known 4. James Phalan (d. 3/1/1867) had five children Bridget (#9) Ellen (#10) Mary (#11) John (#12) and Margaret (#13) died in Ireland 5. Patrick Phalan(d. 11/20/1882) died in Ireland (Kilsheelan) 6. Anthony " " 7. Dennis " " 8. Ned (Edwin) had seven children. Mary (#14) -(who married a Mr. Chase and resided in Chicago) Mike (#15) of Lowville who had two daughters He married Ellen McGraw (#16) Mollie (#27) & Lizzie (#28) Thomas (#17) of Cortland John (#18) of the West. James (#19) whose children were Kate(Piper) (#20). Dennis (#21) of Lowville, James (#22), John (#23) dead, and Minnie (#24). These latter two of Cortland, NY. Minnie for some time & perhaps at present is better known as Minnie Major. And two more boys (#25 & #26) who fought in the Civil War and never came back. Ellen (#10) moved to England but previously in Ireland had married a Mr. Burns. They had three children, Mary, Agnes, and Dennis. Dennis, who must now be about 46 years old (1913) came to Boston, Mass. And made his home with his aunt a Mrs. Kinney - his father's sister James (#22) resides in or near Herkimer, NY. (Lived in Lowville NY as of 1892) My father's (Margaret's) home (#12) was at Kilcheelan [sic] 4 miles outside of Klonmell [sic] Co. Tipperary. John (#18) who I said went west may be remembered by another name as it is thought he assumed "John" at about the time of the Civil War or shortly thereafter. He has three sons and a daughter. She teaches school (-may the Lord help her). Two of the boys are employed in a bank and the third is a civil engineer. Thomas (#17) of Cortland has two or three sons in New York City. I understand one of them is an alderman. Also a daughter. Mollie (#27) married a J. Doug Dence of Lowville NY. Lizzie (#28) married a Mr. Schermerhorn-Barnum (formerly of Chases Lake NY) Bernard, John, Helen Sheamus [sic]. [Assume children] Bridget (#9) Had one son Hugh (Dunn) (Lived in Utica as of 1880 census) Mary (#11) remained in Ireland and married a Mr. Fleming who lived outside Kilcheelan [sic]. John (#12) has five children: Thos. Jno [sic], Mary, William & Winnifred ( Jno. Is James, my Grandfather) - Mary P. Margaret (#13) married a Patrick Keyes and has five daughters: Mayme, Teresa, Anna, Margaret & Esther.

    2. Jann, Thanks for the reply. I found my Edward John Whalen owning a home in New Bedford, Mass in 1900 on the census that year. He likely lived in and around that area in any of the small towns. Because the boundries of the towns changed from year to year he may show up in Fall River, Mass and Fall River, Rhode Island, Providence, RI, etc. The 1900 census only lists his children still living in his household plus an adult daughter who married a Sullivan and moved in with their three children. Let me know if I am in the right neighborhood for your people and I will go into more detail with names. Carol Phelan

Glenda ************** Source: IRELAND-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL~ROOTS] Searching for Origen of Thomas Feland I would appreciate any info available on my ancester Thomas Feland who "legend" has it came over to Virginia about 1750 from Ulster Province. I found land purchased by him in 1769 in Bedford county Va. but nothing prior. The name is variously spelled as Failing,Fealan, Failing or Felan on the documents. I understand that in Ireland it would have been spelled Phelan. He came over with two brothers and I think they were Protestants. I have had no luck with ship passenger lists and have hit the proverbial brick wall so am hoping some kind soul can suggest where I might turn to further pursue where this first Feland came from in Ireland. Has anyone ever been on the Feland trail in Ireland before? I am new at this hobby and am sure there are clues I'm just not aware of which are out there somewhere! Thanks Heaps ! (3 Oct.) #4 Source: MAESSEX-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MAESSEX] Missing marriage record I have been researching the LALLY family, Anthony H. and Mary Ellen Phalen McDonald Lally of Gloucester for several years now. All attempts to locate a marriage record for them failed. I inquired at MA Archives, the state of MA and also the City of Gloucester. I recently received a copy of Anthony's Civil War pension records. Enclosed, much to my delight, was a copy of an affadavit signed by the pastor of St Ann's Church, and the Gloucester City Police Clerk. This affadavit provided the marriage date of 22 Nov. 1874. With this info I again contacted the MA state Archives....still no record. Did this record simply fall through the cracks? I am preparing a letter to be sent to St Ann's requesting a copy. However I vaguely remember that they lost records for the cemetries in a fire. We were unable to locate information on the cemeteries for a burial at Cavalry in 1958. Does anyone know if the fire destroyed other records as well.....will I be disappointed again? Gena Gates Lally Researching in Gloucester, LALLY, HOGAN, AMARAL
