Is it safe to assume this quote is from a newspaper in Cape Breton or would I be wrong to assume Sydney, Australia? Chris, Thank you for posting this info.....very interesting.
Mar. 9,1935 - The Sydney Post-Record James Phalen Glace Bay, N.S. March 9- Found nearly a month ago in a semi- conscious condition in the home where he lived alone on Whalen's Road, James Phalen, aged 72, passed away this fornoon in St. Joseph's Hospital, never recovering from the stroke he suffered. The deceased was the last member of a noted pioneer family of Glace Bay men, the brothers who predeceased him being Captain William; Captain Edward; Messrs. John, Patrick, Hugh and Andrew Phalen. G'day from OZ. A newspaper clipping from 1931 found amongst my mother's belongings proclaims the death in Milthorpe, New South Wales, Australia, of my ggmother, Margaret DOWLING (Nee PHELAN) at the age of 96. Part of the info. provided states that she was born to Thomas PHELAN (Master Builder) & Peggy ??? in Clonmel, Tipperary in 1835 & migrated to Australia in 1852, her brother James PHELAN is also referenced with the claim that he was one of the 'gallant 600' that took part in the famed Charge of The Light Brigade. Memories from my childhood insist that I was told about James at a very young age & additionally that he was one of the survivors albeit missing a leg & that he eventually married girl from India. My question is twofold:- 1) Does anyone have any knowledge of Clonmel PHELANS? 2) Can anyone suggest a place of enquiry that might provide information about Irish enlistment in the British forces during the Crimean war or where I might be able to view a list of Battle of Balaclava survivors. I would much appreciate any help provided. Best Regards, Ross Cleary, Kiama, New South Wales, Australia.
Glenda, I print out and save any and all references to Whalen/Phelan and other interesting various spellings of the same name. Your efforts always spark enthusiasm in me, no matter how unrelated the reference may seem to others. Keep up the good work.
