    2. Chris Doehring
    3. My Phelans all came from Waterford, thru Nova Scotia. Any canadian Phelans out there who know they were related to either Father David Vincent Phalen or Father David Samuel Phelan, both of North Sydney, Nova Scotia? Fr. Phalen was the editor of the Antigonish Casket (F. Xavier University's paper at the turn ot the century) and Fr. Phelan was the editor and co-owner of "The Western Watchman" one of the longest running Catholic newspapers in America (located in St. Louis) at the turn of the century. Chris Doehring St. Louis, MO

    3. Chris, I think my Phelans also came through Canada, then to St Louis. (oral history) We've talked about this before. My question, to anyone really, is how to do research on entries into Canada, ships lists there, connecting with the big center for immigrants that is in Canada at the site where the flood of Irish came into country. What is the name of this center and is their web contact to be made? Pat Phelan Dailey Looking for PHELAN MCGRATH BANNON ("Queens Co."on tombstone; now know as Co. Laois) and BURKE. They are all likely from SE Ireland.

    2. Mary Phelan
    3. According to a family name history I have the name Phelan is an anglicized form of the Old Gaelic surname O'Faoilain which is derived from the gaelic term foal which means wolf. Supposedly Phelans claim descent from Milesius, King of Spain in ancient times. A.D. 148

    2. I concur with this spelling situation. In my searches I have found for the same family PHELAN, PHALAN, PHALEN, PHALON, and PHELON. What's a researcher to do? 3. Hello All, Just a word of advice for all you Phelan/Phalen/Whelan etc. researchers out there -- do not discount the variant spellings of this last name. I was quite surprised when I read what my g-grandfather, Philip PHALEN, put down on his marriage certificate for his parents names -- Michael and Catherine PHELAN. When Philip came to North America, he was listed on the ship's list as Philip PHELAN but after that, he was always called Philip PHALEN. In other words, we Phelans likely ARE all related!! 3. Jack, give us some info on your GGF, name, where located, etc. Let's see what turns up. Anyone can join the Phalen list if they want to by sending a message to PHALEN-L-request@rootsweb.com and put only the word subscribe in the body of the letter. Personally, I would cover all the bases and join both because it's very common to see the same name spelled both ways in the records. That way, in case soneone joins the Phalen list without joining the Phelan list, you'll still be able to catch any of their messages. I just put a note in the welcome message for the Phalen list to advise them to join the Phelan list. Maybe this will take care of the confusion. Glenda > I've been following the Phelan Site for over a year. This is the first mention of the Phalen list that I've seen. My GGF came from Ireland about 1850. I have death certificates on my GF and My Grandfather John. I would like to trace my GGF to Ireland to see if he had any siblings (Phalen, Phelan, Whalen, etc.). Any suggestions will be appreciated. > > Jack Phalen > >

    1. [Phelan] Phelan/Phalen mailing list??
    2. Kenneth Womack
    3. > Is there a difference between the tow lists? I would like to be on both if > possible.Jann Whalen Parks I'm the listmanager for both. I set the Phelan list up myself in 1998, then lo and behold Rootsweb (when bought out by Ancestry.com) set up the Phalen list on their own. When I saw it, I went in and asked to be the listmanager of it. Since no one had actually asked for this list, they let me adopt it. Occasionally, out of stupidity, I'll post a message to the Phalen list by mistake but I think I've got a handle on that now so everything I post goes to the PhElan list. But just in case senility takes over again, you might want to join both. You can do so by sending a message to PHELAN-L-request@rootsweb.com and put only the word subscribe in the body of the letter. There are 130 Phelan subscribers but less than 40 on the Phalen list. I just sent a message to the Phalen list asking them to join the Phelan list. I tried to get Rootsweb to cancel the Phalen list but they won't. Very confusing to me. Lately, ancestry.com is setting up a mailing list of every name possible and most of them don't have listmanagers, usually they just lay idle. So if you have an unusual surname, you might want to check rootsweb again to see if there is now a website. It doesn't cost anything (like it use to) to become listmanager, just a little extra time to keep the activity up. Glenda (listmanager)
