Hello everyone: Thanks Glenda, for making this list happen! I'm searching for information on my g-grandfather, Jeremiah " Joseph" Phelan. He is said to have been born in September, 1857. I have conflicting information as to his birthplace. I do know that he worked for a railway and resided in Ontario(Canada), St. Louis, Missouri, Little Rock, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee at various times. He was first married to Mary O'Hearn and I believe they had 2 sons and 2 daughters. One daughter was Margaret Mary Phelan (married Louis Blatz and resided in Missouri). Mary O'Hearn died and Joe Phelan somehow ended up in Hamilton, Ontario where he met and married my g-grandmother, Elizabeth Wren in about 1902. They had my grandmother, Angela Julia Mary Phelan in 1903. I've heard she was born in Little Rock in 1903 (unconfirmed). In 1905, Elizabeth died in St. Louis and she was buried in Hamilton, Ontario (Canada). In the funeral records for Elizabeth, Joe Phelan lists his birthplace as Memphis. Angela was raised in Canada and didn't know of her father's existense until the 1920's. I don't know where Joe Phelan was between 1905-1920. I think the children from his first marriage probably were in Missouri. Maybe he went back there? Joe Phelan died in 1942 in Hamilton, Ontario and never mentioned parents, brothers or sisters or anything about his past. If any of this sounds familiar, please e-mail me. Any information is always appreciated. Thanks, (Mrs) Frankie McGraw-Nicol Hamilton, Ontario Canada [email protected] SURNAMES: McGrath/McGraw, Devaney, Wren, O'Donnell, McKenna, Phelan, Bennett & Tarrant
Welcome to the Phelan Mailing list. Please feel free to post any genealogy information for Phelan or related lines to the list. The more information we share, we more we will learn. My Phelan line has been a dead end for me even though it was the first surname I researched 10 or so years ago. I cannot get past my greatgrandfather, JAMES MONROE PHELAN, born 1824 in Bledsoe Co., TN and who enlisted in the Mexican war in 1846 in Jonesboro, IL. Nothing is know about him between that time period. I photocopy any and all data on the Phelans taken anywhere, everywhere I can find it. I will periodically post these findings on the list as time allows. I INVITE ANY AND ALL TO DO THE SAME. The only thing I ask is that you don't FLAME anyone and please bite your tongue before you write anything nasty. I do believe that my greatgreatgrandparents did not have children and that is the reason I can find no record of them - ha. Glenda Womack Listowner

Taken from Book titled as above, although I failed to get info on who published, author etc., etc. PHELAN/PHELEN, Thomas - Rev. War Pension Application #R8168, dated 13 April 1837, Washington Co., AR. He was born 28 October 1752, place not stated, but was residing in Euwchland (?) township, Chester Co., PA in the Summer of 1776, when called into service. He was serving in Washington's Regiment at the Battle of Long Island, when he was stricken with "bloody Flux". He was hospitalized in New york for the remainder of his tour of duty. In 1777, he moved his family to Georgia in St. Paul's Parish near Columbia County. He served in several skirmishes with Tories and several engagements with the Indians. In 1778 he received a head wound in a skirmish with Tories. His application for pension was rejected, however, on 14 December 1852, Jeremiah Phelan, aged 75, applied for arrears in pension, stated that he was the son of Thomas Phelan, who died 28 Aug 1838, that his mother, named Mary, died 14 Dec 1830. He further stated that his father and mother were married 6 Jun 1774.

Anyone recognize Evans Phelan who was in Bledsoe Co in 1828? I received the following response from the owner of a small press in TN regarding a query about my grandfather, James Monroe Phelan, who was born in Bledsoe Co in 1824. He was in Jonesboro, ILL when he enlisted in the Mexican war in 1846. Have been unable to find mother or father's names, except family-lore says his name was "Jerry". Glenda Womack Phelan Mailing List owner >Sara wrote: >>I've searched the Bledsoe County census, 1830 to 1870...didn't see need to go farther...found no Phelan. There are none in the telephone book, either. I live in Sequatchie County, and our directory covers Bledsoe County, too. I did discover this deed abstract for you: (I have abstracted Books A-D.) Bledsoe County Deed Book D, page 321 Deed dated 19 March 1828...Evans Phelan of Bledsoe County and State of Tennessee to John Nail of county and state aforesaid...$215.00...parcel of land in county of Bledsoe on Cumberland Mountain on the waters of Bee Creek... description...s/Evans Phelan...Witnesses: Elijah Tucker, Thomas Jordan... Recorded May 7, 1829 This is the only entry for Phelan in the index. Since Roane county is the parent county of Bledsoe, the purchase might be recorded there. I have never been able to find any relating to any of my family, though.<<<
Chris, I sent message to Bill Day, owner of Hunt-Phelan home, asking if he'd participate on mailing list. Will wait and see. He has a wealth of knowledge regarding his Phelans which didn't help me but might someone else. I had to send it to Home website so don't know if he'll get it or not or how soon.
