    2. Here's some links if you believe that your ancestors came from Ireland to Canada before coming to USA................ Date: Thu, 27 Aug 1998 03:35:52 -0600 From: matt emerson <[email protected]> Subject: Irish in Canada The URL below will give you links to a number of Canadian sites including 5000 settlers from Wexford/Wicklow; the Peter Robinson Settlers; New Brunswick, St. John’s and PEI. Large numbers of Irish went to Canada because the fare was cheaper. Gross Ille was a quarantine station where many Irish immigrants died of ships fever, starvation, and lack of clothing on the voyages. A lot of the Irish didn’t want to stay in Canada because of British rule there and moved on the US as soon as they were able, but many settled in Canada on a permanent basis. St. Johns, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, the Chateauguay River valley of Quebec, and many localities in Ontario had Irish settlers. If anyone on the list had ancestors in the Chateauguay Valley (once Beauharnois, now Huntingdon County) Quebec, please write to me. A number of Irish went to Canada with the British Army in the 1795-1815 era; they were encouraged to settle along the border and be ready to fight for England in the event of border disputes with the US. Date: Mon, 10 Aug 1998 10:32:38 -0300 From: "mpower" <[email protected]> Subject: Searching for Power and Phelan Hi..I am new to this group and do not have a lot of information on the people that I am researching. I am looking to establish an Irish connection for my great grandparents, John Power and Roseann Phelan. John was born about 1815 and Roseann was born in 1823. They spent most, if not all of their lives in St. Mary’s Newfoundland. They or their parents were born in or around Waterford Ireland. Their children Michael, James, John, Margaret and Johanna were all born in the St. Mary’s area of Newfoundland in the 1840’s/50’s. I beleive John’s father was also called John and it is likely that it was he who immigrated to Newfoundland around 1800 +/- Headstones of the early Irish in St. Mary’s would indicate that many of them came from the Waterford/Kilmacthomas/Dungarvin area. Any information/suggestions would be appreaciated. Mike Power ..............end........... More to come, Chris

Hi Glenda: I'm not on your list, but I found this and thought someone might be able to use it. From "History of Alabama", by T.M. Owns, pub 1921. "Phelan, Charles, circuit judge, 1868. "Phelan, Ellis, lawyer, secretary of State, was born August 11, 1843, in Marion, and died August 5, 1897, in Waterbury, Conn; son of Judge John D. and Mary Anne (Harris) Phelan (q.v.). He was educated in the schools of his community and graduated from the University of Alabama. He entered the Confederate army, as a captain in the 45th regiment Alabama volunteers; and was major when wounded in the battle of Atlanta. After the close of the war he studied law and was admitted to practice. During the administration of Gov. Edward O'Neal, he was secretary of State, for two terms. He removed to Birmingham and was prominent in the early development of that city. He was clerk of the house of representatives of Alabama, 1870-1877. About 1880, he removed to Waterbury, Conn., where he was elected circuit judge, which position he resigned to resume the practice of law. He was a democrat; and an Episcoplalian. Married: (1) in 1870, to Amy Hawkins, of Elyron; (2) in 1884 to Mary Frisbil of Waterbury. Last residence: Waterbury, Conn." "Phelan, James, lawyer, State and Confederate States Senator, was born October 11, 1821, in Huntsville, and died May 17, 1872....." ---Sorry ran over to next page which I did not copy. 2. Marie L. Scott
    3. Greetings to one and all, Our James Phelan was born in April 1856 somewhere in Ireland. He married Mary Carrolton Bowe, widow of Thomas Bowe, around 1880. James and Mary emigrated with her 10 year old daughter, Catherine, in 1882 to the United States. They lived in Buffalo Ny for a short time and finally settled in Youngstown, Ohio. James was a laborer for the Consolidated Company in Youngstown and was killed in a job related accident on June 15th, 1908. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown. According to the 1900 census, Mary had given birth to six children and only one lived to adulthood which was Catherine Bowe. This is the only information that I have on him. Does this ring any bells with anyone out there? Sincerely, Marie Scott

    3. Well, list, this double message problem is not just our problem. According to messages on my Newbie-Listowner's list, other people are having the same problem in the mail mode only and it is intermittent. No one is saying what the problem is yet, but hopefully it's being worked on as I haven't heard anything from rootsweb who is the server for these lists. SO ...... my suggestion is to post away. If you're a subscriber who HATES double message, you may want to think about unsubscrbing in the mail mode and then subscribing in the digest mode until this gets cleared up. Or if you're like me, I'm going to wait it out and see what happens. It usually will take care of itself - now you understand I'm no expect, but I think it's the way you hold your tongue that day - ha. We are growing, growing, growing. Thank you all very much - I'm so proud of all of us and let's keep posting and trying to connect. I promise I won't be as verbose as we go along as I am now but rootsweb suggests that we keep up as much posting as possible the first few weeks the list is up to keep new subscribers coming on list at least interested and know we're alive. So the more you guys post, the less you'll hear from me. hint, hint, hint..... Thanks, Glenda

    3. Hi, Phelan cousins! This is GREAT. It's so encouraging to be on something like this right from the start! I am looking for one of my great-great-grandfathers. His name was Martin Phelan. I have no idea where in Ireland he was born. He married in Stamford, Ct. in 1854 and died July 21, 1893. His death certificate lists his parents as "Michael" and "Mary" but no further information is given. Now here's where it gets interesting. I'm pretty sure, based on some research I did on a quasi-family legend, that Martin had a brother named James, who married a woman named Mary Holland. They had a daughter named Mary Phelan, who was born March 25, 1865 in Queens County, Ireland. She also came to the U.S. and married a James Broderick in Stamford, Ct. in 1891. This information naturally led me to think that perhaps Martin Phelan was also from Queens County, but I had a basic search done in Queens and none of these names turned up. Can anybody help? Special note to J.R. Lally: I'm also searching for Lally! Specifically, a Bridget Lally born in Ireland whose father was Thomas Lally, and that's all I know. Bridget emigrated to the U.S. and married Thomas Glynn in Stamford, Ct. in 1866. Any bells going off? Thanks, Glenda, for bringing us together! Lois Jamieson

    2. hi! Just joined this list....have a couple of Phelan's in my husband's chart in Brooklyn, NY.... 1880 NY census shows Michael Dooley and Mary Phalen (my husband's gg-gmother) (born Ireland abt 1840) with the following children: Anna Dooley, Mary, Bridget Theresa, Margaret, Elizabeth, Helen.... I believe that Michael Dooley and Mary Phalen were in NY from at least 1867, as their oldest daughter is noted as born in NY in that year.... the next listing in the census (neighbors-relatives?) are Phalen, James w m 41 occ. laborer born Ireland Anna wife, 36 occ: housekeeper b. Ireland Mary daughter, 13, born NY Anna daughter, 11, born NY James, son, 6 , born NY John, son, 3 , born NY Thomas, son, 1 , born NY Steniware (sp?) Henry, boarder, 21 occ: dentist, born NY is anyone researching Phalen in Brooklyn during this period? thanks! Charna

I've sent in error problem to Rootsweb and I won't send anymore messages to the list until I think it has been corrected.
