    3. Hello Gaycha, the housenumbers remained the same over longer periodes of time but not hundresd of years. In the village I am living in I know of three changes in the house-numberíng: 1. 1838 with the establishing of the real estate registration (Grundsteuer-Kataster) 2. 1899 after a house building boom at the end of the 19. century, which could no more be matched by the old numbering scheme. 3. 1972 with the introduction of a numbering system based on the streets with the even numbers on the right and the odd numbers on the left side of the street and no more based on the construction date of the houses. Lukily our adminsistion did not adopt the peculiar Berlin-system of house numbering with increasing numbers on one side of the street up to the end and than further increasing numbers on the other side of the street back to the beginning of the street. I have heard that the first house built gets #1 and it remained that for as long as the house stood. This would be in a small village (Knittelsheim to be exact) > > Gaycha Mayhew >
