There are four entries in the IGI for Michael Menz(en), have you investigated them? www.familysearch.org If Michael was born in 1817 he would likely have married about 1840/ 41 (22-23 was the usual age) and this fits with your chronology. Without the name of his first wife you have only the son's names to go on but the IGI might yield some information about them. Neither of your family ancedotes is much help, especially that about "Hamberg." ShtetelSeeker at: www.jewishgen.org shows 12 Hamburgs and 11 Hombergs. I'd suggest you go into the online German phone book and determine where there are Menz or Menzens living today. That might provide a clue. If nothing turns up on the IGI and if you have some hints as to where there are Menzs today, you will need to determine if your the LDS Church has filmed the records' for that location and, if so, order them at your local Family History Center and search the films for your ancestor. On the US end, have you investigated the record of his second marriage for any clues as to where in Germany he might have originated? This is unlikely to provide any information but is worth investigating. Rob Hausman ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Robert E.
