Prior to the Napoleonic era, the Pfalz was a bewildering hodgepodge of jurisdictions, with adjoining villages subject to different rulers, and some villages even being held *jointly*. For example, Hochspeyer was held 1/6 by Kurpfalz, 2/3 by the Fürst von Leiningen-Daxberg-Hardenburg zu Dürkheim, and 1/6 by the Freiherr von Wallbrunn. Brian
