I went to Speyer at the end of May '06. It is a beautiful small city of about 40,000. Many of its people speak english. I had no trouble at the archives and found the women there to be very helpful. You do need an appointment to be able to obtain any records. It cost me 11 Euros for the copies I got. Well worth it. I found that a cousin, whom I thought was unmarried, turned out to have been married and that her spouse died soon after, without leaving children. I hope you get to Speyer too. The Domstadt (Catherdal where they crowned the Kings) is grand.
