Sonny, In 1848 there were many ports of departure from that region of Europe: Calais, Harve, Antwerp, and etc. There were also many ports of entry into the US where one might end up in Ohio, such as Boston, Baltimore, New York, even New Orleans, and Montreal. BTW, the departure ports did not keep records, but the arrival ports did. If you can find the arrival ship, the ship's manifest will give the port of departure. Be forewarned, in that time period there is usually no useful information on the manifest, such as last residence or village of birth, as records much later had.
