Many passengers lists are not legible. Before I found my g-g-grandfather's I searched through copies of passenger lists and could not decipher many of the names. Also, keep in mind that when these names are indexed they could easily be recorded wrong. As an example, I was looking for Elias Rebholz and I found an "Eliza" Rebholz who was listed as a baker. Three months later, after going through a few hundred passenger lists, I realized that not one woman had an occupation. I then went back to the original index, got the information concerning "Eliza" Rebholz; when I received the copy of the passenger list, the name was actually Elias Rebholz, my g-g-grandfather. Also I could never find this Elias Rebholz in the New York City Census; however, it was a third cousin (whom I met through my family search) who found him listed with an altogether different spelling for his name. Only because she did not use the "exact match" system and was patient enough to go through every listing, was she able to find him. Good luck in your search. Dorothy
