I found the following: John Bastian, age 29, (possibly 27?), left from Penzance, England on the ship, Oregon, and arrived here on July 29, 1859. John Bastian, age 21, left from Penzance, England, on the ship, Mountaineer Cary, and arrived here on April 30, 1851. Was a miner. This listing shows John to be a female, but I'm sure that's incorrect. It's possible one of these men is your ancestor. He could have gone to England, then boarded a ship to USA from there. The only Sophia I found arrived here in 1926. However, there was a Sophie Bastian, age 20, who arrived here on June 12, 1854 on the ship, Deutschland, which sailed from Hamburg, Germany. I've read it was common for a married woman to sail under her maiden name. Where did they live when they came to New York? Dorothy
