For anyone whose ancestors came before Ellis Island: >From August 1, 1855 through April 18, 1890, immigrants arriving in the state of New York came through Castle Garden. I believe immigrants coming before that time arrived at any wharf in NYC. If anyone has more information about that, I'd sure appreciate learning it. And great news: because I checked before sending out this Castle Garden information, I found a web site which lists the immigrants that came to New York during the 1850's.
