Hi Lowell, The word is Schultheiß or Schultheiss meaning mayor or village magistrate. The "ß" is an umlait and converts to English as "ss". Sometimes the "ß" is called a sharp S. The German "ss" may be shortened to "s" but the "ß" should never be shortened to "s". This is probably more then you wanted to know.
