Dear Jim, Regarding the Pfalz or Bavaria issue, we had an oral history and a military document from the Bavarian army that my 3 grgrandfather, Joseph Pfeiffenberger, which indicated he was from Bavaria at that time (1845). However, being that Germany wasn't united until 1871, it was true that he was from Bavaria. When state lines were changed, his hometown, Hauenstein, which was listed on his military papers as his town of origin, was now in the Pfalz! So, at the time your ancestor immigrated, he could have been from Bavaria at that time!
