Bob, Arthur Teschler's GEOserv instructions (http://www.rootsweb.com/~wggerman/resources/geoserv.htm) state that it accepts wildcards. Therefore, a search using "*dorf" would find all places that end with "dorf" in Germany. Neither GEOserv nor ShtetlSeeker allow subdividing old Germany as part of the search. ShtetlSeeker does allow choosing your own central search point, so you can select a city in Hesse as the central point and all distances will be measured from there.
