    3. Hi Folks: My person of interest --Georg Leonhard Walter was a Lutheran born in Sept 25 1832 .He died of an infection caused by a mining accident in Sept 16 1869. His first child (John Walter) was born in Oxford NJ in Aug 8 1853. He and his Wife Margaret Walter (no maiden name has been found) had a child almost every year after that until my Grandfather Thomas Roland Walter (the youngest child)was born in Nov 1867. The church he attended ,Durham Evangelical of Durham PA, managed to lose the church records for the period of 1859 to 1870. I have a $200 reward out for their recovery.I still have to go through the newspapersfrom the Oxford NJ area as he lived there till 1859. He did start naturalization in 1858 but never showed up for his court hearing and so no data is available there.I have elicited the Mormons and various Genealogists to help find his origins but so far all (rather pricy!)efforts have failed. I believe he was from the Pfalz because he was a Lutheran and a couple of his children listed him as being from Bavaria on the census of 1890 or 1880 . The first federal census I have found him on is the 1860 census od Durham PA. His name was spelled Leonard Walder instead of Walter which threw me off for a while. He and Margaret are said to be from Baden on that census but I have Exhausted my Baden search.(Baden archives of the Grand Duke etc.etc.) I have a signature on his will which is well done and does not match the other writing on the document. So I conclude that he was literate. Any help would be much appreciated Jim Walter

Is this John first found in the 1860 Census. I there any indication that there may have been earlier children who died before 1860. > He and his Wife Margaret Walter (no > maiden name has been found) had a child almost every year after that > until my Grandfather Thomas Roland Walter (the youngest child)was > born in Nov 1867. The Lutheran church was widespread in Germany. Assuming he was from the Pfalz because of his religion is IMO a mistake. While the Pfalz was part of Bavaria at that time, the Lutheran and Reformed churches probably existed in the main part of Bavaria. The first federal census I have found him on is the 1860 > census of Durham PA. here was he reorded as being from in this Census? Have you looked for him in the New York and Philadelphia Passenger Arrivals Lists? If he was living in Oxford first it is likely that he came through Ne York. Searching for George Walter and Margaret Walter at: http://stevemorse.org/ellis/passengers.php?mode=ny finds a number of people that arrived between 1847 and 1853. Look at the records and see if any arrived on the same voyage. Look also for Leonard Walter. Have you read any histories of Warren County that mention the miners that came there and what port they may have entered through? His name was spelled Leonard Walder instead of > Walter which threw me off for a while. He and Margaret are said to be > from Baden on that census but I have Exhausted my Baden search.(Baden > archives of the Grand Duke etc.etc.) I have a signature on his will > which is well done and does not match the other writing on the > document.
