    3. If he was Catholic this is very, very likely. It was also common for aunts and uncles to be the godparents of their siblings' children. Maybe the older Sebastian had a brother of the person you are looking for. (Sorry, I can't remember who was originally looking. I hope this gets to that person. --Marybeth ----- Original Message ----- From: <Stewartdor@aol.com> >I haven't followed the e-mails about Sebastian Stemmler but when I see the > statement that "perhaps he was a predecessor to your Sebastian" it makes > me > think the Sebastian born in 1758 could have been the godfather to the > Sebastian > whose records are being sought. I haven't followed the e-mails about Sebastian Stemmler but when I see the statement that "perhaps he was a predecessor to your Sebastian" it makes me think the Sebastian born in 1758 could have been the godfather to the Sebastian whose records are being sought. It was common to name the children after their godparents when they were christened. Good Luck in Your Search. Dorothy

    3. Tim, I found these records in the IGI at the FHL catalog website: Sebastisn Stemmler Male Birth: About 1758 Pforzheim, Karlsruhe, Baden Sebastisn Stemmler Marriage: 03 JAN 1788 Pforzheim, Karlsruhe, Baden Perhaps he was a predecessor to your Sebastian. I have a Johann Nicolaus Stemmler (1702-1770) in my family tree in Glan-Muenchweiler. His daughter married a Velten and aVelten married a Dietrich. There are Glan-Muenchweiler records online, both Evangelical and Catholic at http://www.igi-index.de/?seite=batch8&lang=uk&sort=ort&id=glan-Muenchweiler Maybe you can find your Sebastian there. I'm not at home now to order this film and was wondering if some kind soul would look up this marriage for me. I'm hoping his parents are Joh. Lorenz Saar and Charlotte Arnold. If so, I will order the film when I get home. Thank you for reading this. 3. Germans to America is as complete as the records they have to work with. They are particularly good for Hamburg emigration. The emigrants from Bremen, for example, are not included because those records were burned in WWII. My ggg grandfather Karl F. W. Brandt arrived in New Orleans from Nammen in Westphalia in 1853, having emigrated through Bremen. After many hours with the set of Germans to America, I searched the port of New Orleans indexes on film at the FHL for likely entries, then sent for the films to look at the full passenger list. We confirmed him by looking at who was listed with him--a Glammeier family, his uncle's. The FHL has similar indexes from each port as they have been compiled. Jerry in Boise
