I apologise for the duplicate post. I forgot to fill in the subject line. I am researching several unrelated ancestors in the Pfalz. each of them give their birthplace as Bavaria, but they were from the Pfalz area of Germany they are; Jacob and Christopher Dunheiffer. first, what spelling would their name be in Germany? would it be Dunhoff? I can find very little regarding the name as I have it. Jacob was born about 1804 in Bavaria. we know little of his time in Germany beyond this, except that he came to America sometime before 1840. Christopher is likely to be his brother, also born in the period 1800-1810, and living in the same town as Jacob, which is Cambridge, Ohio, U.S.A. Jacob is my fiance's ancestor. Christen Ultsch, aka Christopher. he was born about 1833 in Bavaria. we know little of his time in Germany except that he left on the Weser or Wessler in 1872 and arrived in America on 20 Jul 1872. he settled in Erie, Pennsylvania. he is my late husband\'s ancestor. Johann(es) Weyrauch. he was born about 1785 and says on his immigration record that he was born in Bavaria and was from Bergzabern, Spire, Bavaria. I contacted the archives in Spire and they couldn't find anything on him. he died in 1848 in the area of Johnstown, Pennsylvania and there is little in the way of a record for him. his immigration says he left Havre de Grace on 3 Apr 1831 and arrived in New York on 15 May 1831. he is my ancestor. if anyone can give me guidance to tracing these people in Germany, I would greatly appreciate it. their christening/baptism records are not in the International Genealogical Index at FamilySearch.org as far as I can tell. I also have a Charles Wagner, b. abt 1855 Poland or Rusia son of German parennt(s) Anton and Thecla Wagner, but I do not know where they came from. they left Germany around the time of the civil war, settled in Poland or Russia, removed to England and Charles came to America. there is virtually no paper trail, most of my information for the Wagners comes from vaguely remembered family stories. Charles is a great grandfather of mine. regards, Cornelia

I don't know, since that is not one of my family names I have been researching. 1. Franz Graff, probably born before 1769. On 31 July 1789 he was the godfather at the baptism of Franz Rippon (one of mine). It's an interesting entry because he had quite a title, which I translated (from the Latin) crudely as: "The Noble, Magnanimus, Benificent, Vigilant Lord [some important sounding rank] in the Military." 2. Ludwig Grafft, probably born before 1702. On 6 October 1716 he was the godfather at the baptism of Anna Maria Mercktel. The godmother was also named Anna Maria Mercktel, and it is possible, but not sure, that they were betrothed at the time. Wilhelm, I have no idea when or where records for Gossersweiler were made before 1732. But I can say that a few decades earlier Louis XIV's armies marched into the Pfalz and burned a lot of churches and other things. (Those that hadn't already been burned down in the Thirty Years' War.) A lot of records went up in smoke. Many churches did not restart records until quite a while later. I have no idea if that happened in Gossersweiler. One person wrote and said the church wasn't open until 1732. It may have been new. Or it may have been rebuilt. Records are burned up in every war. The current wars are no different. And it is still disturbing to me that history is being destroyed. Somehow, I can't help but think that we should know better by now. I guess it is just the way of the world. At least I have the satisfaction of knowing that if a bunch of genealogists were fighting, they probably wouldn't burn valuable records up! How do you knowthat he was born in Ensheim, Alzey-worms Also Illinois is up river from New Orleans.and I think his name would have been Johann Freiderick Graf. Johannes is usually used when his prename and common name are the same Johan. Ensheim now is part of Alzey

I think that the Catholic Church in Gossersweiler did not exist before 1732, that Gossersweiler was settled or founded in 1732 or that the church books before then were destroyed. The church might have been in another town. Towns around Gossersweiler are Hauenstein, Annweiler , Silz, (quite small) and Völkersweiler. Do a place search in the FHL Catalogue for them and see if RC records prior to 1732 exist there. bob gillis
Dear Listers ! Does anybody have an idea where the Catholics of Gossersweiler were recorded before 1732 ? I am living far from the area and that doesn´t help me with my search very much. Thank you for any clues ! Wilhelm

I went to Speyer at the end of May '06. It is a beautiful small city of about 40,000. Many of its people speak english. I had no trouble at the archives and found the women there to be very helpful. You do need an appointment to be able to obtain any records. It cost me 11 Euros for the copies I got. Well worth it. I found that a cousin, whom I thought was unmarried, turned out to have been married and that her spouse died soon after, without leaving children. I hope you get to Speyer too.
