    2. Thank you so much for your help. Even though the timing is not the same, perhaps there were other Jung families living in the town of Oberhoffen where Margaretha Jung came from. Thanks for the directions of Oberhofen too as I have no idea on locations. Any information may help in the future. Thanks again. Marge Birk

From about 1777 until about 1914 the Pfalz was part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Actually the Palatine Elector was the last of four lines of the house of Wittelsbach and he inherited Bavaria 1742. The capital of Bavaria was in the Pfalz for a number of years until it was moved to Munich. From 1914 to 1945 the Pfalz was part of the German state of Bavaria. After WW2, Germany realigned the states and the Pfalz became part of the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. Again when and where did these men live? They may not have entered through NYC. > >there are many hits for Charles Wagner's online and in Filby's books, it's a very, >very common name. so far I haven't been able to discver which Charles Wagner is >mine, with exception to the 1883 immigration and later records. those later >records I've been able to prove were him. earlier records haven't been so easy to >ferrit out. as far as I have found there is no death record for him...but that's >another story all together. > What is the last Census he appeared in. 2. thank you for your notes, Bob, first, I did indeed note in my original post that Johannes was b. in R. Pfalz. I got that from his naturalization-actually it says Bavaria, but this was in about 1785 and I have learned from talking with other researchers that Bergzabern was in the R. Pfalz at that time, but people called the area Bavaria. it is not at all where the "new" Bavaria is. there are many hits for Charles Wagner's online and in Filby's books, it's a very, very common name. so far I haven't been able to discver which Charles Wagner is mine, with exception to the 1883 immigration and later records. those later records I've been able to prove were him. earlier records haven't been so easy to ferrit out. as far as I have found there is no death record for him...but that's another story all together. Jacob does not give much information, and Christopher even less as he (Christopher) d. before 1850, but Martha Dunifer (note spelling variation), Jacob's daughter and Edwin's great grandmother, states in her census records that her father was born in "Bavaria". again, this would be R. Pfalz. Charles obviously was not born in R. Pfalz, but I threw him in because he's part of the mix. that is, regarding immigration records and not being able to find passengers. I will look into the advice you gave and see if some of the lists you mentioned may be able to help. regards, Cornelia ps, someone mentioned that only certain people were listed on the Ellis Island index-I think 1st and 2nd class? well, I've found that at Ancestry, everyone's listed, whether cabin or sterage, and that some cabin people aren't listed at Ellis...so, caveat....also, each site has a mostly completely different set of immigrants-Immigrant Ships Guild, Ellis Island, Castle Garden's and Ancestry-some obviously because they are from different eras, but some simply because of different collections. so check all of them. unfortunately, most of my people aren't there...and I've noticed a large collection of British immigrants, and not as many German immigrants...so far. so I've found most if not all of my 1800's British immigrants and none of my same era German immigrants. they'll show up, eventually. 3. This may help some of you out: [OliveTreeGenealogy] Immigration, Census, Obits, Letters and more from Olive Tree Genealogy From: "olivetreegenealogy" <otg@csolve.net> To: OliveTreeGenealogy@yahoogroups.com Hello everyone, I've got a lot of new items to tell you about today. First great news: Ancestry is offering free access to their recently updated online ship passenger lists and immigration records collection from November 9-30, 2006. All you need to do is register, no credit card is required. This includes their newly updated New York passenger lists database, from 1820-1957. Ellis Island website online only goes to 1924 so this is your chance to search for elusive ancestors in that later time period. Steve Morse has created one of his wonderful ONE STEP search engines for this database. See http://www.stevemorse.org/ More ships passenger lists can be searched at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/ ::snip:: I have many resources listed at http://genweblog.blogspot.com/2006/06/immigration-and-emigration.html Hope this helps, Valorie

    2. both of my mother's grandfather's were German, though I suspect one immigrated to England before he arrived in America. I'm also looking for a German ancestor of Edwins. none of them show up in either Ellis Island, Castle Garden or the Immigrant ships guild, searching both by given name and by surnames. however one of them shows up sporaticly in Ancestry's immigration records...but not for his original immigration, as far as I can find. Jacob Dunheiffer b. abt 1804 Germany arrived in America 1830-1840 his surname is not even close to whatever surname he was born under. I've tried both Dunheiffer and Tunheiffer in the IGI, which is rather general in it's soundexing, and nothing comes up. if anyone has a good idea as to what his surname is in Germany, I'd be glad to hear it. also, he appears to have a brother Christopher. Charles Wagner b. abt 1855 Poland/Russia of German nativity, said to have been raised in England. he shows up in immigration in June of 1883, presumably coming back from a shift on board ship as he was a sailor, and listed as an American citizen. this is the earliest record I can find for him so far. he marries in October of that year. Johannes Weyrauch b. abt 1792 Rh. Pfalz (of Bergzabern) naturalization states he arrived in America on 15 May 1831 at New York. he arrived with several children, and I suppose his wife Mary, though I have no proof of this. his children who came with him were Caroline, Magdelene, Michael Matthew, Frances John, and maybe several others. try as I might, I have yet to ever find these people's immigration records. not knowing when Jacob and Charles arrived doesn't help, and Jacob's surname could have been vastly different from what I find him and Christopher to have by 1840. any ideas?

    1. Re: [Pfalz] JUNG, Johann Georg
    2. Mary Beth Michaels
    3. Marjorie, I did not research the Jung name, but I did find a mention of a couple of Jungs in my file of Catholic records from Klingenmünster that I have transcribed. Probably doesn't mean anything to you, but just in case here it is: On 13 July 1783 Margaretha Jung married Johann Müller. She was probably born before 1768. Her father was Laurence Jung. Her mother was Barbara [no maiden name available]. She was a Lutheran, although the groom was Catholic, and her family came from the town of Oberhoffen. The witnesses were Johann Schumacher and Heinrich Hoffman. Oberhofen is just south of Klingenmünster a little ways. They are both north of Bad Bergzabern, which is just north of the French border west of the Rhein. It appears that by this date your ancestors were already in the US, but maybe a search of the LDS IGI records of Jungs from Oberhoffen would give you some ideas. It occurs to me that at some point there was a Governor of the Klingenmünster area named de Jungker, appointed by the Palatine Elector I believe. Good luck. 2. For anyone whose ancestors came before Ellis Island: >From August 1, 1855 through April 18, 1890, immigrants arriving in the state of New York came through Castle Garden. I believe immigrants coming before that time arrived at any wharf in NYC. If anyone has more information about that, I'd sure appreciate learning it. And great news: because I checked before sending out this Castle Garden information, I found a web site which lists the immigrants that came to New York during the 1850's. Maybe I can now find my g-grandmother Kate Mueller Rebholz. Check out the web site at _www.castlegarden.org_ (http://www.castlegarde n.org) Good luck in your research. Dorothy

    3. Evelyn, This Ellis Island site: http://www.americanparknetwork.com/parkinfo/content.asp?catid=70&contenttypeid=34 mentions the gift shop, and that the video shown in the theater is available there. You could contact them to find out its price, and if it could be ordered. There's a phone number for them on the "park overview" link, and probably a way to contact them via e-mail, too. Most National Park Sites offer for sale the video(s) they show. There could, however, be more than one video, so knowing the actual title would probably be good to know. It's been 13 years since I was there, and can't remember if we saw the movie, or not. You might also check your local library. I know ours has a lot of documentary and educational videos, so it's possible they could already have it in their collection. 2. You are correct, Dorothy. I have never been to Ellis Island, everyone was here earlier, but our Genealogy Society showed the movie--or a movie--on immigrants' arrival. It was inspiring and made us all look harder for the ancestors. Jeanne

    2. Hi, Evelyn - I'm not sure if it can be rented but someone told me they saw it on television. Maybe if you contact Ellis Island at _www.EllisIsland.com_ (http://www.EllisIsland.com) you can get information on it. Also, if you go to that website you can look up any ancestors that you know came through the island. I heard the other day that if an immigrant came first or second class they did not go through Ellis Island so there name would not be on the Ellis Island website. Does anyone know if that's true? Dorothy

    2. I recently traveled with my son into New York City and went to the Statue of Liberty and then on to Ellis Island. Though I have no one in my family who came through the Island (they all came years before Ellis Island opened), I knew my son caught the "genealogy bug" when he stood in the middle of the main hall and said, "Just think, Grandma Stewart (my husband's grandmother) came through here." Ellis Island has wonderful displays along with the voices of immigrants explaining what their entry into America was like and their impressions of different foods, customs, etc. And though we didn't get to see the play, the movie is a definite "must see." A lot of people left the theater with tears in their eyes, including me. I am sure that if you can get the chance to see it you would thoroughly enjoy it - whether or not your family came through there. Dorothy
