    3. Yes, I have Googled the place names, but I was hoping to hear from someone who had first-hand knowledge, or who could tell me a little about the history of the area during the early 1800s. Also, are there any local historical centers that do research for that specific area? What Lutheran church served Monsheim? Why did the son attend church in Ebertsheim? Was there no Lutheran church in Mertesheim? In other words, I was hoping to correspond with someone else who had done research in the area and might have a few tips. 2. Dorothy, would you be so kind as to look for my Johannes Weyrauch who states in his naturalization papers that ..."he sailed from the port of Haver the Grace on the third day of April 1831, and arrived in the city of New York in the United States of America on the 15th day of May ensuing". Haver the Grace being the port of Havre, France. he should be with his wife Mary, and at least these children; Caroline, Magdelene, Michael Matthew and possibly Francis John. these could be written in German, French or English, depending on where their true allegience lay (Germany or Alsace) or where the Captain was from and what his native tounge was. there may also be a son George and/or a son John. unfortunately there are far too many ways this name can be mispelled. I have tried numerous times to find them at Ancestry to no avail. thank you! Cornelia

    1. [Pfalz] Entry Into New York
    2. I found the following: John Bastian, age 29, (possibly 27?), left from Penzance, England on the ship, Oregon, and arrived here on July 29, 1859. John Bastian, age 21, left from Penzance, England, on the ship, Mountaineer Cary, and arrived here on April 30, 1851. Was a miner. This listing shows John to be a female, but I'm sure that's incorrect. It's possible one of these men is your ancestor. He could have gone to England, then boarded a ship to USA from there. The only Sophia I found arrived here in 1926. However, there was a Sophie Bastian, age 20, who arrived here on June 12, 1854 on the ship, Deutschland, which sailed from Hamburg, Germany. I've read it was common for a married woman to sail under her maiden name. Where did they live when they came to New York? Dorothy

    3. I found them on the 1850 census in Port Washington a town in OHIO,Tuscarawas county . Wilhelm died there in 1869 there after the others move to different parts of the country . Frederic and family moved to Emmet County Mich . along with their mother Louisa . David moved to Kansas and my G grandfather Jacob moved to Belleville Illinois . I know there were a lot of other German families in Port Washington Ohio . They all fought in the Civil War Fred and David in Ohio and Jacob in Illinois . The girls have been harder to track . Thanks for all of the encouragement . Just thought someone might have some idea on the immigration to this part of Ohio. 3. I lived in Baumholder from 1998-2001. I'm sure you know there's a military post there. It is a nice little town and I have wonderful memories of it. There is also a LDS Family History center in Baumholder. I used to volunteer there, even though I'm not a lds member. Wish I could go back. ;) Good luck on your research. ;) Anne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Godfrey Eardley" <geardley@mail.win.org> To: <PFALZ@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 20, 2006 11:38 PM Subject: [Pfalz] Ship listing >I have a departure document for my Pees family from Baumholder . 2. Hi, John - Before 1855 the passengers simply got off the ship to whatever wharf they had arrived in Manhattan, not having to go through a central processing center. However, there are still passenger lists for many of these people. I have a passenger list from April 1839 with my g-g-grandfather's name (among 200+ other passengers). If you give me the name of your g-g-grandparents, maybe I can find them. Dorothy

    1. [Pfalz] Researching Passenger Lists & Census Records
    2. Many passengers lists are not legible. Before I found my g-g-grandfather's I searched through copies of passenger lists and could not decipher many of the names. Also, keep in mind that when these names are indexed they could easily be recorded wrong. As an example, I was looking for Elias Rebholz and I found an "Eliza" Rebholz who was listed as a baker. Three months later, after going through a few hundred passenger lists, I realized that not one woman had an occupation. I then went back to the original index, got the information concerning "Eliza" Rebholz; when I received the copy of the passenger list, the name was actually Elias Rebholz, my g-g-grandfather. Also I could never find this Elias Rebholz in the New York City Census; however, it was a third cousin (whom I met through my family search) who found him listed with an altogether different spelling for his name. Only because she did not use the "exact match" system and was patient enough to go through every listing, was she able to find him. Good luck in your search. Dorothy

    1. [Pfalz] Entry Into New York
    2. Recently found this information: Before 1855 the passengers simply got off the ship to whatever wharf they had arrived in Manhattan, not having to go through a central processing center. They were recorded on passenger arrival lists beginning in 1820. It should be noted that the ships never actually landed at Ellis Island -- they landed at Manhattan and the passengers were ferried over to the island for processing. Generally only steerage passengers went to Ellis Island for inspection -- MOST of the first & second class passengers were allowed to leave the ship soon after docking. All passengers, however, were listed on the ship manifest (or passenger list). Before August 1855 the immigrants arrived at the wharves of New York City; >From August 1, 1855 through April 18, 1890 they arrived at Castle Garden, an island off Manhattan; >From April 19, 1890 through Dec. 31, 1891, they arrived at the Barge Office; >From January 1, 1892 through June 13, 1897 they arrived at Ellis Island; >From June 14, 1897 through Dec 16, 1900, they arrived at the Barge Office; >From December 17, 1900 through 1924 they arrived at Ellis Island.
