I am new to this list and am most interested in the history of, and reasons for emigration from the Rheinland-Pfalz, with a more specific area of emigration to Galicia. I have traced my grandmother's lineage back to a German settlement in Galicia (Muzylowice) and further back to another settlement (Fehlbach). From there, I have found that the original settlers had come from the area around Sien, Kirchenbollenbach, Offenbach. Are there any English language historical publications that anyone knows of that would give me a history of that German area? Andy Tereshyn Toronto, Canada

I would particularly like to hear what Mr. Thode has to say in his address: "Coping with German Border Changes and the Importance of Dates". This is in response to Karla's inquiry concerning the Schneider family in New York. My great aunt, Mary Scheller married Jacob Schneider, the son of John Schneider, on 10/11/1879. I do not know if they are in the same family but it sure is coincidental we are talking about people with the same names and in the same time frame. If Karla wishes to contact me at RayAOne@aol.com I will be happy to share what information I have. By the way, Clare Boothe Luce was part of this Schneider family. Ray Scheller
Dear Karla & listers, I cannot help with the SCHNEIDER Family but I do have a research interest in Bobenheim, either of the two towns by that name that are in the area of Bad Durkheim, Worms & Mannheim. Would it be too much to ask that when you are reviewing the LDS/FHL (Mormon) films for Bobenheim am Berg that you keep an eye out for the family surnames KOERBER / SCHLEIFFEN & URBAN ca. 1600-1700+/-. Anyone out there researching these names in this location? Thank you, Bette ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karla Nurnberg" <muessidenn@yahoo.com> To: <pfalz@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 14, 2007 12:34 PM Subject: [Pfalz] WHERE TO WRITE FOR EMIGRATION RECORDS? > At the present time I am waiting for films to arrive at my local > Family History Center for Bobenheim am Berg. Karla, The tool I use for the question you ask "Have I left any records for that area, where someone's christening from Bobenheim might be recorded?" is ShtetlSeeker (http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/LocTown.asp). Once you find the correct village, click on the little target in the right column and it will list all the villages within 10 miles in radial distance order. I start by copying (highlight then crtl-c) each in order and going to the online LDS Family History Library catalog at FamilySearch and check (crtl-v) to see if they have the records I seek. FYI: The column with E M U G will give a map from Expedia, Mapquest, mUltimap, or Google. Note: ShtetlSeeker shows there are 2 Bobenheims only 10 miles apart: Bobenheim am Rhein and Bobenheim am Berg. BTW, in some areas of old Germany the local pastor was tasked to record all the baptisms, marriages, and deaths in the village, regardless of religion. There is the little known fact that the pastors were employees of the state, not the church. Karla, If you are using LDS church records to determine your possible family, it might be wise to borrow the film(s) and search it yourself. I found that the film listing the birth of my greatgrandfather in the 1850's had been only partially transcribed and only baptisms of his older siblings were listed at the FamilySearch LDS site, although his and his twin brother's baptisms were actually also on the same film. The fact that they were twins was of great help to me determining the correct family, of course. Good luck. Pat
Dear Listers, My husband's 2nd great-grandmother, Maria Magdalena SCHNEIDER was born in Bobenheim according to the christenings of her two daughters in the New York City Church books. I found a SCHNEIDER Family, who landed in New York City in 1842. The Father was named John and there were two older brothers, John and Jacob. Magdalena was twelve years old at the time, which was a good possibility that I had the right Family, since she was born about 1830. I would like to determine, if this was my husband's Family, so I can search for more information on the Family in New York City records. I have searched the Church Records around Bobenheim am Rhein for her christening, but I did not find what I thought might be her records. They were Protestant. Since she was born in 1830 the parish registers of Roxheim-Bobenheim are way too late. I searched Gross Niedesheim and also Worms. Have I left any records for that area, where someone's christening from Bobenheim might be recorded? At the present time I am waiting for films to arrive at my local Family History Center for Bobenheim am Berg. Hopefully, this will be my lucky films. The christening stated that she was from Bobenheim in Rhein-Bayern, so either Bobenheim fits the bill. Thanks. Karla --------------------------------- Looking for earth-friendly autos? SAMUEL SCHNEIDER (Snyder) was born July 4, 1809 in Northampton (now Lehigh) County, Pennsylvania. Church records from that period of time are missing. Consequently, I do not know the name of his parents. It is likely that it was either Samuel's father or grandfather who came from Germany. According to word of mouth passed down through the generations, my ancestors came from Luxembourg. Might a Luxembourger embark from Hanover? Are there any records in Germany/Luxembourg that might list names of people who emigrated to America, landing in Philadelphia, and then settling in the counties of Northampton, Lehigh and Berks in Pennsylvania? I will be grateful for any suggestions on how to proceed in my search. Phyllis Snyder Albright
