Since the subject does not have aR: in it I guess it is not a reply. I do not find a message from a Maureen in recent list mail. Your original subject should have been: WALTER, Georg Leonhard immigrated to USA 1852/3 Is is good netiquette to quote the message yu are repying to. And to Maureen, if you replied privately to Jim Water, his list is set to Reply-to-List.Please reply to the list. bob gillis

    1. [Pfalz] Ancestors from Edenkoben, Rheinland Pfalz, West Germany
    2. My ancestor is in the list of '1833 Thru 1906 Palatine Emigrants From Edenkoben' as researched by Pfarrer Alfred Kuby of Edenkoben and published by the Pennsylvania Chapter of Palatines to America in 1989. It has taken me many months to obtain a copy of this booklet. If anyone else has an ancestor from Edenkoben who came to North America, I would be willing to check for the name in this list for you. 3. Dear Jim, I have forwarded your info on to my sister, who married into a WALTER clan. They have some genealogical records and will do some looking for you. I know that her clan is Catholic, but, some people converted once here, or married into the faith in the States. She may get back to you personally. 3. Bob, Arthur Teschler's GEOserv instructions (http://www.rootsweb.com/~wggerman/resources/geoserv.htm) state that it accepts wildcards. Therefore, a search using "*dorf" would find all places that end with "dorf" in Germany. Neither GEOserv nor ShtetlSeeker allow subdividing old Germany as part of the search. ShtetlSeeker does allow choosing your own central search point, so you can select a city in Hesse as the central point and all distances will be measured from there. 1. Re: [Pfalz] Georg Leonhard Walter
    2. In order to find the village Georg Leonhard Walter came from you will need to scour every U.S. record you can get your hands on - there is no central repository in Germany so it would be very difficult to hunt around all over there. It would help if you include his wife's name, where they settled, dates of birth, marriage, death in your inquiry. If you are searching only on line, that's only one avenue and not all-inclusive. Have you checked out newspaper obits and other articles in English and German language papers? Before radio and telephones there were an amazing number of tiny articles about anyone and everyone - that was the best means of communication. Even if you don't read German Gothic you can recognize the name and dates. Cemetery and sexton and tombstone? Mortuary records? Memory cards? Naturalization? Probate? Siblings? Memberships like IOOF, Sons of Herman, Woodmen of America, Turnvereins and many more? Most especially, the church records here, plus application for marriage license; military service. Also remember those who lived nearby, often came from the same place. What did he do for a living - are there records of that place? Local historical society information? Schools? Do you have any knowledge of the dialect he spoke? Any recipes handed down with German names? Sauerkraut is not the same everywhere. Family traditions which sometimes indicate locality? Have you looked at Cyndislist.com? Maureen Schoenky ************************************** Get a sneak peak of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

She has > Kreis Schifferstadt and I have always been under the impression that > it was in Kreis Ludwigshafen. Geo@genealogy.net says that both Otterstadt and Waldsee are in Kaiserlauten County/Kreis and both are in Verbandsgemeinde Waldsee. the geo data base is as of about 1996. This Kreis was renamed Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis in 2004. A Wikipedia article on The Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis says: The Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis is a district (Kreis) in the east of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise) the district-free city Worms, the district Bergstraße, district-free Mannheim, Frankenthal and Ludwigshafen, Rhein-Neckar, district-free Speyer, the districts Karlsruhe, Germersheim, Südliche Weinstraße and Bad Dürkheim. The district was created in 1886 under the name Bezirksamt Ludwigshafen, one of the last acts of king Ludwig II of Bavaria. The population in the area around Speyer had grown significantly, which made the splitting of the Bezirksamt Speyer necessary. 1969 the two districts Speyer and Ludwigshafen and part of the districts Frankenthal and Neustadt were merged again to form the new district Ludwigshafen. On May 19, 2003 the district parliament did pass a resolution to rename the district to "Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis" starting in 2004. So Depending on the time of the event, Speyer or Luwigshafen could have been the Kreis where these two villages were. There does not appear to have ever been a Schifferstadt Kreis > Then I have another relation that states Speyer is the correct one. > Is there a historical timeframe that make all three locations > correct? Not as far as I can see. bob gillis

The names as recorded in America were what a probably English speaking recorder thought the German Theobold Beck said. Before the cousins go they should search Familysearch.org and rootsweb.ocm for him and his children who were born in Germany. They should buy a book in German genealogical research and read it and take with them. bob gillis In a biographical sketch of his great granddaughter, it is > Daywalt. 2. Does anyone have the following or access to it? There is a page or two I would like copied. It tells when my great grandfather left Germany for North America: 1833 thru 1906 Palatine emigrants from Eden Koben (in Rheinland Pfalz West Termany) to North America It lists John Nicolas Hoffman and another young man as well as a young couple with child. I know my ggrandfather stowed away so I'm looking for any indication any of the others did. My guess was that the 2 young men did... aided by the couple. I wondered how the original information read. gilda ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
