Hi Janet, It is really wonderful to have these lists. When I started researching over 10 years ago, I really had to dig . It amazes me how much information and help has become available on-line in just the past 5 or so years! I'm so glad that Heinrich's diary has been appreciated by so many! I know he would be too. << Subj: emigration Date: 04/14/2000 10:01:13 AM Eastern Daylight Time From: janetlk@mail.dreamscape.com (Janet L Kral) To: KIsland@aol.com Your copy of the diary from Heinrich Jordan was forwarded to the New York Finger Lakes list. Just want to thank you for posting it. My grandfather came from near Neustadt to the US in July of 1869 on the SS Paraguay. The diary entry gives an idea of what it might have been like for my grandfather. I also now know that there is a Phalz list, which I was not aware of. Perhaps I can now get more information. Thanks for sharing. You just never know where the next tidbit will come from! I have been researching my Metz family tree. Our family emigrated from the village of Insheim in 1862. I would be interested in hearing from folks also researching families from that village. Insheim is near Landau. Thanks. Joe Metz Cincinnati, OH
I am specifically looking for anything pertaining to a ships list for the year 1767 out of Rotterdam. Does anyone know, for sure,[no suggestions please...I have exhausted them all] of a specific source? Further, does anyone know of a similar site where evidence can be found for ships leaving Rotterdam and then sailing to Cowes, England, before taking the journey to Philadelphia, U.S.? Several have written inquiring about the route through LeHavre their ancestor's took from the Pfalz to America. I thought I would share the diary entry written by my g-grandfather, Heinrich Ludwig Jordan, 2nd from Rödersheim (near Ludwigshafen and Neustadt) about his trip to America. I am not certain that everything is correctly translated because someone did it very long ago and I've never had another opinion. It's written in the old script. MY TRIP TO AMERICA IN THE NEW LAND TO SEEK MY HAPPINESS In the year 1869 my trip was as follows: Wednesday, the 6th of October, 1869, I went to Neustadt in the morning at 8 o'clock and by 11:00 o'clock I was already in Wissembourg. There I stayed and went by Böll and bought a ticket (A Kort) for 100 FE in Gold. At 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon I took the train from Wissembourg and Thursday at 5 o'clock in the morning I was already in Strasbourg. 9 o'clock I left from there and at 12 o'clock I was already in Paris. There I ate lunch and also supper. This cost 7 Franks. A glass of beer 7 su or 12 Dri. One Frank has 7 Su. Thursday evening at 11 o'clock I went again to continue my trip to Havre and on Friday at 8 o'clock in the morning I finally arrived at Havre. Now good luck for my trip on the water! On Friday the 8th of October 1869 at afternoon, 2 o'clock I got onboard the ship for my trip on the water and for whatever else. As I got onto the ship everything was foreign and I stood there feeling entirely forsaken and strange. I thought back once again to my homeland and everybody there. The names were now called out on the ship's tickets. There I heard a name called out "Matheas Resch" and when I heard that name I thought I had to know him! ..that he was from Forst! When you heard your name called out, you had to go and get your straw sack and your mess kit. That I did right away and then I saw Matheas Resch and I went to him and greeted him full of joy and the two of us never left each other again! Now we are leaving for the trip to America. The ship has blown the whistle for the 2nd time and it is supposed to go at 3:00 in the afternoonn. For the thrid and last time the whistle blew and we hoped we were going to sail on. Then everybody screamed all at once as loud as they could, "Adieu, Adieu, for the last time you Germans, Goodnight!" Now it's going forth and on the 10th of October we have spent our Sunday on the sea. Now we were on the voyage to Liverpool and on Tuesday, the 12th of October we had safely arrived in Liverpool. Wednesday the 13th of October we went on the big ship NEVADA, and now begins our final trip to America. But it was very bad. For 3 days long we had a big storm. Then on the 25th of October, Monday at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, we arrived happily and luckily in New Yoork. We got off and stayed by Georg Edler Gast Haus zum Baierischen Hof, No. 30 Rector Street. Tuesday, 26th of October, evening at 4 o'clock, I and Matheas Resch left for our trip to Sandusky (Ohio). Thursday evening at 8 o'clock we are again fortunate and we happily arrived at Joseph Lesser's. The length of the trip was 3 weeks and 1 day; on the water 15 days. 1869, Heinrich Jordan, 2nd, Sandusky, Ohio (age 24 years 10 months) Saturday, the 30th of October I have already started to work in the Sanduskyer Wein Compani (Sandusky Wine Company) After a brief time in Sandusky, Heinrich moved to Kelleys Island, Ohio (Lake Erie Island) where he lived all his life. He died in 1921. If anyone could supply me with the monetary equivalents and/or let me know if the abbreviations are correct, I'd appreciate hearing from you! Thanks! Natalie

I also have stories from my older Great aunts and Uncle, who all say that My Great Grandfather John Anton Kaemmerer and his family entered the US in New Orleans. Their origin was Kirrweiler, Germany. They made the trip sometime between 1840 and 1856. I had heard from some other Pfalz listers last year that there were no ships taking people to New Orleans. So by these other stories, possibly that was what happened in the case of My Ancestors also. Joe

Barb Rice's question as to why her ancestors from Pfalz and Rhennish Hessen chose to embark at LeHavre is a fairly common one on this list. I am not sure that this answer applies to her ancestors, but it does to two of my lines who came from the same area in 1831 and 1846. Most families in that part of Germany departed from Le Havre, France, as the Rhine was a difficult and expensive trip. First, the lock system in place today was not anywhere nearly as well developed. As a result, in and after a rain the river flowed so swiftly, boat accidents were common. Additionally, there was no Germany in the sense there is today. There were a number of duchies, principalities and other political divisions which extracted "tolls" (extorted would possibly be a better description in a few egregious cases) to permit boats to pass through their part of the river. This raised the cost of Rhine river travel. Beginning about the early 1830s a great deal of cotton was shipped from America to Le Havre and from there it was transported in wagons to Germany and points east. The empty cotton ships then took German and other immigrants to the US on the return trip. It was possible to rent one of the empty cotton wagons empty cotton wagons returning to the port to carry baggage and perhaps the wife and some of the smaller children. This trip could be arranged for a small fee and generally took about 12 to 20 days, depending on where on the route the passengers were picked-up. Most of the cotton ships went to New York and New Orleans. I do not know if this is true or not, but I recall reading once that this is the reason so many Germans who appeared to have no particular reason to go there, arrived at the Port of New Orleans. As I said, I don't know if the above applies to your ancestors, but it surely does to some folks on this list. Vincent Falter

I am interested in how far Bellheim is from Frankfort. I will arrive May 10th. My main reason is to locate a Lunteran Church in Billighem that was active in 1730s when my Philipp Herlas from Mullhoffen was confirmed 1732 at the age of 15 yrs. Anna Catharina Herlas from Muhlhofen was confirmed 1732 at the age of 13. They both went to America Godparents were Jon Wilhelm Vogler and his wife Anna Catharina. A.D. 1740 6th of April provided with all sacraments departed Ferdinand Herles, resident of Muhlhofen, he lies in the cemetery of that place, buried according to Roman Catholite rites. 1738 17. February got married at Offenbach the Honourable young Man Phillipp Herlass with Miss Anna Margretha Preyschin ("in" is in the female ending of the name) says from what I am copying. David Preisch (Breisch) b. 1686 Offenbach Landau Rheiland Pfalz Germany married, Anges Hoffman June 27, 1713 died after 1726 (Both were Catholic) I want to locate the Catholic Church of the Breisch's. The Lunheran of Philip Harless. Ferdinand Harless the father of Philip was evidently Catholic. After I have joined your nice Web Site, I have received many emails that I will never find the graves, but I would love to take pictures of the Churches. I will only be in town 3 nights - It would save me lots of time (I do not speak German only Texan) IF I knew where these Churches were located. Does anyone know if buses or trains goes to any of the above towns? The Catholic Church in in Offenbach Landau. I have copies of the Church Records. The Marriage record of Anges Hoffmannin and David Breisch. etc. I would appreciate any help that you may have on the Churches, if they are still standing and ground transportation. Someone from this list had an old German book with my David Preisch's street address. I will try and find it. Regards, Georgia Hornbuckle Dallas, TX
