    3. Web Site for HESSEN, GERMANY, is at http://go.to/Hessen It should show you how to join the list. I have it somewhere, this above here, I pasted from my Hesse list mail today. They have lots of info for all of Europe as well as German research here in the USA. Most of the maps, you can take down to fine detail by enlarging, I know I have. You don't have to go to Ernstweiler to see the church records. They are probably available through the Family History Center. since you don't say what records you looked at I assume it is the Interantional Genealogical Index. If the source for your people begins with C, E, J, K or M etc. then the IGI entries are from extracted records. These extracted records are quite reliable as they have been made from microfilms of the church records. You can find the microfilm of the church records in the FHL catalog and order it. bob gillis

    3. I find it amazing that people try to do German research without any tools. I myself am not a big tool buyer but folks, a good map of your area is #1 essential tool. Ravenstein puts out wonderful maps 1:2500000 for all the areas of Germany for $11.95. #2 is a German English Genealogical Dictionary, #3 Germanic Genealogy-A Guide to Worldwide Sources and Migration Patterns, #4 The German Research Companion. To me genealogy is more than birth and death dates, but putting some flesh and meat on the bones. How did they dress, what kind of houses, occupations and of course why did they leave. Gaycha Mayhew

    3. In an e-mail I got from my second cousin last night, she shared a little tidbit with me about our family history which I hadn't heard before. We've known that the family left Germany in 1865 or 1866 because they were worried that the oldest sons would be conscripted into the army. My cousin shared with me that she had always heard from her grandmother (who would have been the grandaughter of one of the immigrants) that the family fled Germany, swimming across a river into France. As I've said before, we came from Insheim down near Landau, not far from the French border. Any ideas what river that might have been? Joe Metz

    3. Hello Magaret, there is a Görlitz on the German border to Pologne marked by the river Neisse. Görlitz formerly belonged to the Prussian Silesia. The region around Prag is called Mähren. Hope that helps. Best regards Ernst Dierich. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Mml45@aol.com> To: <PFALZ-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 03, 2000 10:50 PM Subject: [PFALZ] > Hello All, > > Just today I have learned from a marriage record dated 1853 that some > earlier MELKUS family were living in an area named, Gottitz of > Mähren > > Is there anyone on this list who could tell me more about this area > of Mähren > Today it is part of Germany NE of KOBLENZ, I believe. The Riggle/Riegell family of Becherbach is one that I am familiar with because that is my grandmother's family (I am a descendant of Johann Jorg Riegel, b: 17 Mar 1718 in Becherbach). You might want to visit the Stefan Riegel website (http://members.aol.com/stefriegel/riegel.html) and the Riegel/Riggle Freundschaft Association (http://members.xoom.com/riegeld/newsletter.htm). There have been two books that I know of published on the Riggle family (I own both) and there are also at least two different Riggle newsletters published on a regular basis that I receive. -- mailto:fhheld@freewwweb.com _____________________________________________ NetZero - Defenders of the Free World Click here for FREE Internet Access and Email http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html

    3. On the web site of the Pirmasens Genealogical Study Group there is a listing of their publications of church records. For many of the publications, they also have lists of family names. They have a publication for the records of the village of Niederschlettenbach - which is between Bundenthal and Knopf. The surname of Ruf is found in this village. The Study Group will do individual lookups for you and will make copies for a small fee. This is the URL for their web site: http://home.t-online.de/home/braun.b/geneengl.html Good luck. 1. [PFALZ] News from "home"
    2. Joe Metz
    3. I have been researching the METZ family who emigrated to the U.S. (specifically Cincinnati, Ohio) from Insheim in the Pfalz about 1866. A couple of months ago I sent off letters to Metzes who still live in the village to see if there might be any connections. I had received one response from a widow who gave me her husband's genealogy back to the 1830's, but there was no connection (although it's certainly possible we could be related more distantly - as if that wouldn't be distant enough <G>). On Monday, I received a large envelope from another Metz in Insheim. Along with her letter (which I'm still translating), she sent me a booklet of the village's celebration of their 1200th anniversary in 1985. Likewise, she sent a copy of a photograph which they had of three women, not named, nor do I have the connection of the folks who have the picture in their possession (she told me the name, but not who he was). The thing that caught my eye was that the photograph was taken in Cincinnati, Ohio and looks to be from the late 1800's. I've been guessing that they are three of my great-grandfather's four sisters. I noticed a resemblance in the square jaw of one of the women to my great-aunt. I showed the picture to my dad (who was born in 1928) and asked him what he thought and he said the same thing about the square jawed women and said one of the other one's resembled his Aunt Betty, his dad's other sister. Certainly this isn't a picture of them because they were born in 1890's, but others are noting the resemblance too. I'm going to try to determine if there is more information about the picture, but I suspect not. I just wanted to share this wonderful story about the kindness of a possibly distant relative.
