Some list administrators insist on that. I usually only post to the person asking the question myself. If I see a question that I'd like the answer to myself I post to the list also asking for that information to be posted to the list. A lot of information is new to some and old news to others who have been here longer. I guess that I think of these lists as direction finders. When you're stuck and would like an opinion of where to go from here. Or when you run up on something you've never encountered before. Some lists have started an FAQ address for that list and carry it in the tag line for all new beginners to find basis answers. My two cents worth. JFM.

    3. This is a follow-up comment on the thread initiated by John Newbright and Joe Metz. It is clear that much activity takes place behind the scenes of this and other lists. I access the Alsace and Hesse lists as well. Much of this, I know from experience, is helpful to those beginning their investigations. Having only begun seriously investigating genealogy early last Fall, I find myself inundated with requests for data, translations and comments from those in similar situations. On the other hand, it would be helpful to have a stock answer as to where to being along the line suggested by Joe. This could be done by an individual. The Alsace list has one or two such individuals who tell folks about Family History centers, the Family Search site and basic genealogy resources. I am continually amazed by the patience of these people as I could not do it. For the rest of us, I think it is very hit or miss. Once you scratch the surface and dig into Parish records you are largely on your own. The function of the lists is to randomly provide clues to the names of individuals, usually residents of the village being investigated, who have devoted much of their life to cataloging the local records. Unfortunately, it does not happen often. 3. John, I've wondered about this myself. In many ways, it's a crap shoot, although every now and then you do hear of folks getting a hit on something. As for me, I am researching ancestors who came from the village of Insheim, near Landau. I'm researching the names Metz, Karch (or Karg), Buckel, Phalzer, Gerum, Schwein, and Gademann. All are from Insheim until the early 1800's or even, in a couple of families, until the first half of the 1700's. I haven't run into many people with ancestors from Insheim. 3. Hello I have been observing on the sidelines for sometime and would like to make a comment. Most of the posting , which I have read, are asking questions specific to an individual ancestor. Very seldom do I see an answer to this type of question. Are there responses being sent to the individual rather than the list? I also see many questions as to the location of a village, what are addresses of Archives , etc. These questions are repeated time after time. The purchase of a basic German research book , a visit to any of the numerous Germany home pages , a visit to a local LDS library , or a search of the archives of this list would provide the requested information. I am searching the villages of Niederkirchen, Morbach , Hefersweiler , Heimkirchen and Wörsbach with an interest in the names GEIB, NEUBRECH(T) ,BACHER and GÖDTEL. I own books related to this area and will be happy to do look-ups if your ancestor was from these villages .(No "blind" lookups!) Please post any comments or questions to the list. Thanks John

    2. << Niederkirchen, >> Hello John, I used the LDS films and found some of my MELKUS family living in Niederkirchen after they married in 1832. Then 2 daughters were born in 1833 & 1834. If this is the same town, Niederkirchen, it is north of Otterberg and north of Kaiserslautern. Do you have anything in your books about MELKUS, or the family of Walter or sometimes spelled WALTHER. On my record that I have copied is Franz MELKUS marries Maria Elisabetha Walter 1832-then she died in 1939 and by then Franz moved back to Otterberg (around 1836), &Otterberg seems to be his home town. Have you visited this town of Niederkirchen?

    3. In documenting my KUNTZ ancestors from Bruchweiler (1530-1789), I have been wondering how to describe the area that they lived in. The Rhenish Pfalz shows up frequently in histories on the Web. A 1789 map on Fred Krebs' website shows that Bruchweiler was in the territory of the Freiherr Schenk von Waldenburg (Barony of Schenk from Waldenburg ?). Is one on these more correct than the other? I am not sure if the Elector of the Rhenish Pfalz was like a king and the dukes, counts, barons, etc. served him or whether each was an entity to himself and the Elector just represented them all at voting time. Any enlightenment would be most appreciated. Lowell Kuntz

    3. Actually, the 1992 edition (Picton Press) is the best of the lot. This is the first complete reprint of the Pennsylvania German Society's 1934 edition. It has corrections where a couple ship lists were mislabeled and as opposed to the 1966 edition, it has all the lists, historical background, etc which are in the original ..... including a critique of the mistakes in the Rupp work which is useful when looking at that data. I do not know of the availability in libraries but it's available for purchase .... pricy though ($175 for the three volumes). I've found it well worth it for my personal library. 3. Hello, it is again the old (hi)story. During the Vienna Congress in 1815 nobody wanted the tiny and so poor principality of Birkenfeld. Finaly the Duc of Oldenburg agreed to take the responsibility and the principality Birkenfeld became in 1816 part of the Duchy Oldenburg. After World War II Birkenfeld was integrated into Rheinland-Pfalz. Bergen lays 5 km West of Kirn on the river Nahe.
