I do not have any information on the Dietz names you requested, but here is some information on a few Dietz in my family tree. Hope it may be usefull in some way. My name is Joseph Kaemerer. I have some Dietz family members who married into my Kaemmerer Family. I litterly do not know anything of the Ancestors or Descendents of Frank Dietz. It would be very interesting to obtain more information of that family group.. All three of the Dietz members who married into the Kaemmerer Family were from the same family. I know that they were living in St. Louis MO at the time they met and married the Kaemmerer's. I do not know any thing of their parents or when they arrived in the US or Where they were born, although I assume it was Germany for the parents. For those with possible connections to the Tony or Adolph Kaemmerer who each married a Dietz Girl, I can put you in contact with some of their current descendents. I am making my information on this branch of the family available in hopes of making contact with others with common family connections. I have edited out the names and dates of Most of those living, and their children. If I put you in contact with the descendents of Tony or Adolph Kaemmerer they can offer some one other personal details as they see fit. The Winter 1999 issue of German Genealogical Digest (vol 15 no 4) includes a feature which may be of interest to this list and to those who have ancestral origins in the Zweibrucken region. The table of contents summarized the article, "The Palatine Duchy of Zweibrucken. America's ties with subjects of the duchy of Zweibrucken began early as emigrants from the duchy began populating the eastern United States. This article begins with the translation of an administrative history of the Zweibrucken duchy written in 1822 by Matthew Simon and translated by Roger P. Minert, Ph.D., A.G. Part 2 of the article is a compilation by Laraine K. Ferguson of localities within the duchy, including over 1,500 surnames of 18th century subjects. Names of over 250 early emigrants to American are included with places of origin in the duchy." The cover has a James Derheim picture of the "Residenz Schloss" (Residence Castle) of Zweibrucken, built in 1720 and restored sometime after World War II. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Interesting message, Jillaine. I am researching the EMER family. In a death certificate for Dorothy SCHMIDT, wife of Jakob EMER, Grünstadt bei Wattenheim, Pfalz, is listed as the homeland of the Emers and the Schmidts. Dorothy's parents were Ludwig Schmidt and Dorothy Christmann. Johann EMER, was born 28.03.1803 in Wattenheim (my gggrandfather). My grandmother always said the Emer's were French. I have not been able to determine that so far in my search. Perhaps you paper will clear up a little history. If anyone is researching these families, I would love to hear from you. My great Grandfather, Peter HARRÉ/HARY/HARRY (age 31), and great grandmother Elisabetha BULLEA/BOULLIE (age 26) married in Bisten, near Differten, Friedrichweiler & Überherrn, on 15 April 1844. This was apparently his second marriage, first wife, Elisabetha LORSEN, having died 25 Dec 1843. I've been lurking for a while, and haven't seen these names come up. Does anyone else out there have these towns or surnames in their files? Peter's parents were Johann HARY & Margretha MÜLLER, both still living. Elisabetha's parents were Peter BOULLIE (who apparently took off 15 years earlier) and Margretha BERRAR. Peter BOULLIE's parents were listed as Johann BOULLIE and Catharina FETICK, though both were deceased. Witnesses to the event included Peter MÜLLER (age 47, Margretha MÜLLER's brother), Johann Peter BERRAR (age 45, Margretha BERRAR's brother) and a Michael BALTERS, age 45, apparently a cousin to the groom. I don't have any other siblings names. I'm not precisely sure whether this area is covered by the Pfalz or Trier list. Can anyone clarify for me? Thank you for your help. Actually, the civil records from this time period can still be found in some places. At least I found civil records, written in French, from 1808, specifically, in the city government or country government offices in Bad Durkheim. This is south of the region you are describing, but subject to the same history you described. The records that they have there are civil records for marriage and birth and deaths for the surrounding towns, including Ebenburg, Feilbingert and Altenbamberg. (Bad Durkheim is just south of Bad Kreuznach.) I'll be writing up a report about the research I did in the Rheinpfalz region and posting it to this list in the near future. -- Jillaine Smith, Washington DC http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jillaine

My husband and I are taking a short trip in June. We plan to spend a few days in Otterberg. I have already been writing to the tourist information office at Otterberg and the gentleman at the office has been most helpful.. And we are able to write in English... Jillaine in your report please mention if you could use English to ask questions or if you need to know German in most places.. Thank you, Margaret in Maryland, USA

I'm studying the area of Rheinhessen. In 1792 France invaded and it became part of the region of Monttonnerre. After Napoleon's defeat, it became part of the region of Rheinhessen and given to Hesse-Darmstadt. After 1815, Hesse-Darmstadt was part of the German Confederation. At what date did the rules and regulations of Prussia begin to apply? Was it prior to the 1871 German Reunification? Has anyone found any of the French records relating to this area? When I asked at the Family History Library I was told it would all be located under Hesse. I realize that it where they index all those records, even though the area is now Rheinland- Pfalz. But surely the French didn't leave all the records in Germany? K.D.
I've seen multiple posting concerning this subject, but none which addresses the seemingly obvious. When engaging a German researcher to have some research done, ask the researcher what method of payment is preferred. I commissioned some research in Koblenz some time ago, and the researcher was quite willing to accept my personal check in U.S. dollars. Just ask the question and get an answer. Brian Shorb
Hi, I am researching the HERZOG and FOERSTER families in Zeiskam. Using the LDS films on the catholic church records I have the HERZOG family in Zeiskam from 1745-1865 and the FOERSTER family there from 1717-1865. I have two questions: first, what is the "next" step after I have exhausted the filmed church records? second, does any one know if there is a Zeiskam town history? I know that type of book sometimes exists for American towns, but have no idea if it might for Zeiskam. One that includes either of these families would be great. Thanks, Sharlene
Thanks to all of you that answered my question. I got some great answers. I think the consensus was that it if you go by the sound of the letters in the word you would get "rudy" which is a dim. for Rudolph. While I have your attention let me ask another question. I found what I hope is my immigrant ancestor in a database at Ancestry.com based on this work, "Strassburger, Ralph Beaver, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, - Vol. I-II (2). Norristown, Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania German Society, 1934." All I got back from the search engine was the name, "Henry (X) Shaffner". Is anyone familiar with this book and could tell me if there is anymore information to be gotten from the book on this name other than just the name? I was excited to find this as it is my first solid clue that I have found from my own research efforts. I'm lucky that there have been some wonderful people involved in researching this line, Shoffner/Shofner/Schoffner/ Shafner/Shaffner/Schaffner, etc. I have benefited from all their work and I hope, here and there, that I have added something of worth, myself. Thanks in advance for your help, Jean Mahaffey. mhael@bellsouth.net

Hello, Sorry to post to everyone at once. I am trying to find out if "Rhude" is a German name. If not could it be a misspelling on a record or a shortened form for Rudolph??? Thank you, M.

I generally reply to the list but if the answer is "go to your library and get some books on researching your [German] family history" I reply privatly This same situation occurs on several other genealogy lists that I belong to. Some listers are afraid to reply via the list and others don't know how to use the Reply All. Some non-genealogy lists have the reply to the lsit with the sender as cc. Another, TMG-L, you have to reply to the list unless you copy and paste the senders address. Michale mahffy said: >I agree a lot of responses go on behind the scenes. To delete is so easy to do. I keep the cursor on the delete icon and scan the subject and fist few lines of the message. Asking for the answer to be posted to the list or haveing the original sender send the answer to the list wastes so much effort and bandwidth. You have to send a message asking and the replier probably doesn't see you message till after she has replied. So that means the original sender has to reply to the list again. I would like to see the from and to be interchanged on the lsit messages, From:Pfalz-L and the To: sender. this way if someone Replies to sender then the list gets the message. If reply to all then the list and the sender gets it. If the reply is to go only to the sender, the delete Pfalz-L. Sorry for being so long winded. bob gillis
My research is on Peter Risch family from Bergen & Ludwig Bender family from Kirn. Bergen is about 3km west of Kirn. Both emigrated to city of Green Bay, Brown County, Wisconsin in early1850's. Ludwig married Dorothea Risch, daughter of Peter. The other daughter, Caroline Risch married my great great grandfather August Speerschneider from Bad Blankenburg, Thuringen here in Green Bay in 1853. August came to Wisconsin in 1849. Ludwig Bender was a witness on August's naturalization forms. I would like to contact anyone working on these families. Other possible surnames might be Wolf {or Wolff} and Brenner that may have come from same region. Paul Speerschneider.
I concur with Bob. One other thing I usually do is if I am interested in a question that someone else posed, but don't have an answer, I might respond privately and ask the person who sent it it pass along any responses they receive. That way I too might learn something without being redundant and asking the group the same question. Tim
