    1. [PFALZ] Neustadt Thanks
    2. Janet L Kral
    3. Thanks to everyone for all the help!! The translation site, etc. worked fine, some chuckles over some of the words, but it certainly is a wonderful service. I was able to get pictures, history, etc. of the area. It is a well known area for wine and oddly enough I'm from the Central New York, near the Finger Lakes area which is the wime growing area in New York. Also, I found the ß on my keyboard. Thanks for the help with the name and pronunciation of the ß. Most people think that Hause is pronounced "house" and probably Hauß would be, but we have always, (at least the last couple of generations) have used "hawes" There is a nice site about the Neustadt area: http://www.deutsche-heimat.de/neustadt-weinstrasse/neustadt_hpt.html A couple of years ago I got some addresses from a contact on line which might help someone. I haven't written yet, but now that I found the ß I can type the name easily and will try. I'm including these and his comments: we was searching for Geinsheim and we have the following addresses for you: Fremdenverkehrs- und Heilbaderverband Rheinland-Pfalz e.V. Gesch.St. Pfalz Martin Luther Str. 69 67433 Neustadt phone Q 06321-2466 Caritos-Secretariat Hetzelstr. 11 67433 Neustadt phone 06321-2564 this is a private company for help but we think they can help you Martin-Luther-Kirchengemeinde Pfarramt 1 Kirchstr. 40 67433 Neustadt phone 06321-88240 [looks like an extra digit. jk] the best way to find a person is to ask the churches (Kath. and Luther) Pfarramt catholic Hamback Freiheitstr. 2 67434 Neustadt phone 06321-2861 Thanks again to all who took the time to help. Have a nice holiday weekend! Janet Kral

    1. [PFALZ] Rüdesheim
    2. Am still confused about Rüdesheim. Apparently there are two. When I access the catalogue in Salt Lake I get: Germany, Preußen, Hessen-Nassau, Rüdesheim for one set of records and Germany, Preußen, Rheinland, Rüdesheim for another set. The Rheinland set has church records marked Rüdesheim (Kr. Kreuznach) for the catholic records and Weinsheim (Kr. Kreuznach) for the evangelical records. The Hennen-Nassau set says Rüdesheim (Reingaukreis) for the catholic records and Rüdesheim am Rhine (Reingaukreis) for the evangelical records. Were both a part of Nassau at some time or just the Hessen-Nassau reference? Roger Nichols <SooCtyGen@aol.com>

    3. Hi, I am not researching your names, but my FREY, FISCHER, HAAG, and KURCHER are from Winzingen, which was near Neustadt an der Haardt. In fact it is now part of Neustadt, and is now a street there. You are the first one I've seen who was searching in that area. 3. Dear List, I am a complete beginner on German research (did get the Companion) and do not know any of the language. I have a couple of things: 1. Looking for any information for Leonard George Hause (Americanized Haub- with the German letter that looks like a "b") b 10/7/1857 d 6/24/1932 s/o George Joseph Hause b 1812 d ? m Margarete Maurer b 1821 1893 all born in Geinsheim near Neustadt, Rhineland Pflalz and died Athol,MA. George was s/o Sebastian 1787 Geinsheim m Marie Eva Scherer. Many years ago we were sent translations (from French) of a few records (the above info). 2. My father always said that his father, (Leonard) was from Bavaria and the Black Forest and came with his parents on the SS Paraguay in 1869. I don't know port of departure or landing. In tying to search this out I have found the Geinsheim was at one time part of Bavaria and it is close to the north west edge of the Black Forest. He also was said to have been Catholic, but since there was no Catholic church in Athol, MA the religion was not passed down. I have not yet found a passenger list for the Paraguay on line although I did find someone who posted that his Trounce family was aboard that ship. His website was old and not working so I couldn't contact him, but at least the ship name seems to be accurate. In doing a web search for Geinsheim, just to get information/history about the town/area I find only German sites, which are "Greek" to me. 3. Several members of my family are going on school trip to France in July which includes 3-4 days in Strasbourg. In checking the map it seems to be 50-75 miles from Neustadt/Geisheim. I doubt they will be able to get in Germany, but would the scenery be anything similar to Geisheim area? On the map Geinsheim (a very small town?) seems to between the Rhine river and the Haardt Mts. I would appreciate any information about the Neustadt/Geinsheim area. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Janet Hause Kral

    2. Hi, I am searching for the village/town of origin of my GENIUS and SCHUMAN families. Our old family bible says that JAMES (JACOB) GENIUS was born 26 Jul 1834 "near Neustadt a/ Haardt". I've been told that that means he was from a village/town near Neustadt in the Haardt Mountains. But which village! James' parents were FRANZ EDUARD GENIUS (a burgermeister of his village) and MARGARET SCHUMAN. Both parents died about 1844. They were probably Protestants. Does anyone know if either of these surnames (especially GENIUS) is found in a town/village near Neustadt? Is anyone else researching either surname in the Neustadt area? Thanks, Pam in Louisiana

    1. Re: [PFALZ] Zweibrucken Articles
    2. In reply to the below listed inquiries, I don't personally subscribe to the German Genealogical Digest, but review the library's copy of every issue. It is a very impressive and scholarly produced publication (written in English), but yet very readable by novices, and I'd highly recommend subscribing if you have no other access to it. The magazine's web site is located at <http://www.german-digest.com/>, where you can get subscription info and availability of past issues. To the individual with Army memories of Zweibrucken, yes, the base is still there, but controlled by the German Army. I am still an Army Reservist, and have great memories of the unit exchange we conducted with one of the German reserve units stationed there with mine in Appleton, Wisconsin back in 1995. The other old American military facility there, the air base on top of the bluffs overlooking Zweibrucken, is now controlled by a private corporation. My connections to Zweibrucken (umlaut always above the 'u') come from the surnames SCHONAUER, TRITSCH, KREBS, & AEBERSOLD, although it may be indirect, as the town was named in immigration documents of the ship's passengers. I have documentation that leads me to believe they may have "originated" in the Jura region of Switzerland prior to emigrating in the mid-1700s and only used Zweibrucken as a gathering point or place of debarkation prior to their trip to the American colonies (Pennsylvania specifically). Anyone with any leads here would be helpful. On Wed, 24 May 2000 07:49:50 -0500 Pryse Duerfeldt <pduerfel@nmu.edu> writes: >Dear listmember, I have not heard of this journal. Is it in English? 1. Re: [PFALZ] GEIGER Surname in Rhineland-Pfalz
    2. Beverly Baird
    3. Hello, I am new to this list. I have been researching the Geiger name for about 20 years, but never in Germany. I just found this list so I thought I would inquire about my Geigers. I do not know the town they are from, but I know some of their birth dates. There were four brothers who came to the U.S., three of whom stayed in the U.S., married and raised families. Henry Geiger, born May 1852, Germany. I think he must have been married in Germany the first time about 1877. Then married the 2nd time to a Barbara Karl around 1887. I believe they came to the U.S. around 1890. The following were children of Henry Geiger. George Geiger, born Aug 1878, Germany Barbara Geiger, born Oct 1, 1880, Germany Peter Geiger, born Mar 10, 1883, Germany Andrew Geiger, born Jul 23, 1886, Germany Ernest Geiger, born 1888, Germany John Geiger, born Jun 23, 1889, Germany Henry Geiger, born Aug 23, 1891, St. Louis, MO Mathias Geiger, born Aug 31, 1861, Germany. He came to the U.S. at the age of 14, arriving in New York on 17 August 1876. He settled in St. Louis and worked as a stonemason. He married a Bertha Nowack and had three children; Henry Geiger Elsa Geiger, born Jul 13, 1895, St. Louis, MO, married John Andrew Kohne Mathias William Geiger, born Mar 19, 1886, St. Louis, MO, married Ada Belle Moore George Geiger, born Aug 11, 1865, Germany. He came to the U.S. at the age of 16, arriving in New York on Feb 25, 1882. He was a cigar maker in St. Louis for a while, then moved on to Racine, Wisconsin. He married Ida Louise Kathe, but they had no children. They adopted a child, Lucille (Wilson), who is still living in Wisconsin. I believe these Geigers came from the Rhineland-Pfalz area, and that they left family behind in Germany. One child was sent to the U.S. to escape the German Army, but became so homesick that he returned to Germany. I am a granddaughter of Mathias Geiger and am interested in finding any ancestors or descendants of this family. Thank you for any information you might have. Beverly

    1. RE: [PFALZ] Rheinhessen
    2. Smith, Jillaine
    3. Carol, One name in your email was very familiar. There are Christmanns sprinkled throughout the records I researched in the Feilbingert/Ebenburg/Altenbamberg region, they're all over the graveyards, and there are Christmanns still living in the region, one family running a large nursery in Feilbingert. Grunstadt is southeast of the Alsenz river valley in which the above towns are located. But not too far away to intermarry. The French were in control of the region between about 1789 and 1815, according to the archivist at Speyer (if I understood her correctly). At least it's for this time period that it's very difficult to find church records in the RheinPfalz (apparently the French insisted that all birth, marriage and I think death, records be handled by civil authorities, not the churches). The civil records I found in Bad Munster started up in 1808. They seem to have continued even after the churches resumed record-keeping in 1815. Your Emer may certainly have been French; perhaps located here during their occupation of the Rheinpfalz, and perhaps he fell in love with a local girl. (I'm always one for embellishment...) And if you come across a Leonhard Schmidt b. 1818, please let me know. As I'm sure you know, it's difficult to research the Schmidt surname. I've been hoping to find him in the vicinity of the home towns of his wife's family. So far no luck. He may have had brothers Carl and Philipp (the latter of whom might even be his father-- guessing from marriage witness notes). -- Jillaine Smith, Washington DC http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jillaine > -----Original Message----- > From: Burnstwo@aol.com [mailto:Burnstwo@aol.com] > Sent: Tuesday, May 23, 2000 8:48 PM > To: PFALZ-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [PFALZ] Rheinhessen > > > Interesting message, Jillaine. > > I am researching the EMER family.
